In 2000, the Republican national convention tried to stress their "compassionate" drag. Bush aped much of Clinton's rhetoric, without understanding it. The stage imitated a minstrel show, tho voting delegates were almost entirely Anglo.

30 August 2004: On Monday night, the drag-du-jour was "moderate" and "centrist". Right-wing delegates applauded Rudy Giuliani and Senator John McCain, whom they usually deride as RINO (Republican In Name Only).

I listened to both speeches on National Public Radio. McCain refrained from attacking his friend John Kerry. Indeed, the only person he attacked personally was documentary filmer Michael Moore, the man whom Republicans fear most.

Ex-mayor Giuliani very effectively painted Kerry's portrait as a flip-flopper. He quoted Kerry as saying yes, he did too vote for a certain appropriation bill -- before he voted against it. (IMQO, this sounds quite as silly as any of the Bushisms; and as lawyerly as Clinton quibbling about what the definition of "is" is.) Then Giuliani said flip-flopping explains why Senator John Edwards needs two Americas -- one in which Kerry can vote No, and another in which he can vote Yes on the same issue.

Tho I dislike Giuliani for his past misdeeds, and disagree with him 90%, I must admit he's an excellent speaker. He may not write his own jokes, but he delivers them with good timing. If this guy ever retires from politics, he could thrive as a network television host.

The cynical parade of RINOs will continue on Tuesday, 31 August, with Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

What's Arnie's motive? McCain and Giuliani seem to be positioning themselves to become Republican presidential candidates in 2008, whether Bush wins or loses. And Giuliani (tho not McCain) may want a Cabinet post, IF there's a second Bush regime. But Arnie, as a naturalized citizen, cannot ever run for President (unless he can first
tack a "Schwarzenegger Amendment" onto the U.S. Constitution). So his highest possible goal would be the U.S. Senate.

31 August: Meanwhile, watch Tuesday, on the Net and/or public radio, for news of civil disobedience in NYC, possibly by the black bloc, the green bloc, secular pacifists, et alii.

I'm hoping all of the protesters will remain NON-violent; but who knows what will happen?

Bush and his handlers may be hoping extremists will do something really stupid, which could shift moderate votes away from Kerry. Indeed, mercenary agents provocateurs may be encouraging such stupidity.

*** N U D E PEACE DAY: You're invited to bodypaint and get bodypainted, for peace and freedom, on N u d e Peace Day, the second Saturday of each October, at Baker Beach, San Francisco. Free. Adults of all genders and orientations are welcome. Take #29 Muni bus to Baker Beach (either of two stops; ask driver); or bike there; or walk from Geary Blvd. and 25th Ave. Walk to northern parking lot, which has water fountain & toilets. From parking lot, walk north on beach (toward Golden Gate Bridge), thru prude zone and into clothing-optional zone. Then visually follow the cable fence (separating usable beach from protected vegetation) until you see a Leather Pride Flag (bearing a red heart, with stripes of black, blue, and white). If you don't see the flag yet, just enjoy the beach on your own. Look again for flag, or bodypainters, each hour, especially near the log stairway.
