BAY AREA POLICEWATCH, JUSTICE FOR CAMMERIN, BOYD & KQED PRESENT:

“EVERY MOTHERS SON”

Panel discussion: participate in a discussion with families who have lost their sons to police brutality in San Francisco. Learn about their individual and collective fights to ensure that no other mother looses her son to police brutality.

Screening of a new documentary: "Every Mother's Son" recounts three cases of unjustified police killings in New York, including the case of Amadou Diallo — and tells of the victims' three mothers who came together to demand justice for their sons. Are such killings acceptable or necessary trade-offs for public safety? In reply, the mothers have their own question: What if it were your child?

BACKGROUND ON CAMMERIN BOYD

On Wednesday, May 5, San Francisco police officers shot and killed 29 year-old Cammerin Boyd in front of dozens of witnesses.

Witnesses say that Cammerin, who was disabled and had prosthetic legs, was clearly and vocally surrendering with his hands above his head. The police shot him anyway, stealing his life and robbing his daughters of their father, his mother of her son, and his loved ones of a dear friend and relative.

Why would the cops kill a man who was trying to surrender? Two reasons have immediately jumped to the fore in community meetings and discussions: a blatant disregard for black life, and a vengeful bloodlust in the wake of officer Isaac Espinoza's death in the line of duty.

For years, SFPD has had a "shoot first, lie later" policy, especially when it comes to black people and disabled people. Ineffective investigation and discipline mechanisms have allowed this pattern to continue and develop into a culture of impunity within the department. A recent article into the department indicated that there are in excess of 26 open investigations into offcier involved shootings, this means that SFPD has continued to exonerate its officers without an investigation into their behavior. SHAMEFUL!

Another black man "disabled" because of a high speed chase with the cops, which he lost. A life of crime bit him in the ass in the end.

the way this young man lived you could see this comming a mile away! WHERE WAS MOMMY when this young man was headded down this road? this young man is a reflection of his upbringing and his comunity.

Irrespective of Boyd's history, the SFPD has not yet been exonerated in this incident.

Yes the SFPD of Fajitagate, the SFPD who groped little girls in the Bayview. The SFPD who pulls over people of color caught driving while brown or black.

Not all the cops in this city are bad, but the SFPD needs to clean house so when something like this happens, there is no question that they did their job properly.

Parents outraged at S.F. cops
Female students groped, teen beaten, they say

"Witnesses said officers bloodied and gave a concussion to one 14-year-old youth and conducted a humiliating, groping search of the car's two female passengers, while the girls' screaming, crying mothers were ordered by police to stay back. Police reports state that the officers' response to the teenage boy occurred after he acted in a menacing manner. Police brass say the incident is being thoroughly investigated. No guns were found and none of the teens involved had a police record. When a witness asked an officer why guns were pointed at kids, he allegedly said: "As long as you people are here, we will act like this."

..."The incident occurred across from the Hunters Point Boys and Girls Club and in front of a three-story housing project complex where neighbors say they work together as a family, making sure their kids do their homework. They say the gangs and drug dealers know to stay away. On Wednesday, protests over the incident culminated with scathing testimony before the Police Commission. At the hearing, speakers said it was a travesty that such a confrontation occurred in San Francisco on the day devoted to the memory of King, slain in 1968.

Sue McAllister, 42, a child care specialist whose daughter was one of those searched by police, testified in an anguished voice that her child was an honor roll student who had become withdrawn and troubled since the incident. "You are going to tell me this is OK? … If you cut me, I have the same blood you do," McAllister said. She added later that police had warned she would be shot if she moved while her daughter cried during a male officer's search that McAllister said included touching the girl's breasts, buttocks and crotch. Hey Martin, hate to burst your bubble but that investigation is over. So is the other one at the school. Now, when OCC says the cops acted properly and in fact the people who complained were lying, then you know there is no merit to the complaint. OCC actually said there is video evidence that contradicts what the criminals said, hmmmm. I suggest you read their reports, or are you so close minded that you will not let the facts get in the way of your opinion?

so they dropped the case? prove it. if you have something more current, hey, let's see it.

Case of alleged cop abuse still alive
Police Commission votes to take action against 5 officers

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, March 25, 2004

The San Francisco Police Commission rebuffed a challenge by officers Wednesday and voted to press disciplinary charges against five officers accused of improperly searching two girls and violating the rights of a 14- year-old boy in 2002.

Attorneys for the accused officers in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day incident had asked the panel to dismiss the case, saying the Police Department filed disciplinary charges in April of last year -- three months after the one-year statute of limitations expired -- and had no legal basis for delaying the case.

But an attorney for the Office of Citizen Complaints argued that the deadline could be extended because of a pending civil suit and because of the complexity of the case, which initially involved more than two dozen officers.

"The clock has stopped running (based on the civil suit). ... No further analysis is necessary,'' said Jean Field, an attorney for the OCC, who called the case one of the most complex tackled by the watchdog agency.

The case involves an early morning call on Jan. 21, 2002, about masked men taking guns out of a red car near the Hunters Point Boys and Girls Club.

In an apparent case of mistaken identity, the officers converged on a car that generally matched the description, but no guns were found.

Four youths were in the car. Two of the officers groped the girls, ages 12 and 14, in searching for weapons, according to the disciplinary charges. Two sergeants are accused of violating the rights of a 14-year-old cousin of one of the girls in having him arrested.
