District 5 Candidates’ Collaborative calls press conference urging SF5Together to include all candidates in September 1st debate.

San Francisco – August 23, 2003 – The District 5 Candidates’ Collaborative has drafted a letter to SF5Together urging the organization to invite all candidates to participate in its upcoming debates. At 11:00AM on Wednesday, August 25th, the Candidates’ Collaborative will be holding a press conference at Ella Hill Hutch Community Center at 1050 McAllister St. At the press conference, candidates from the collaborative will discuss the undemocratic nature of excluding candidates from the debate process and present a letter encouraging SF5Together to invite all candidates to participate in its events.

The District 5 Candidates’ Collaborative is a unique and unprecedented organization. For the first time in modern political history, a majority of the candidates seeking election to the same office have agreed to work together to promote and support fruitful democratic dialogue.

On July 7th the District 5 Candidates’ Collaborative and SF5togerther co-organized a debate at the John Adams community college campus that included all candidates for District 5 supervisor. SF5Together is now planning a second debate on Sept 1st and has elected to only invite seven candidates to participate.

In this election year, District 5 has already shown the San Francisco community that there is an alternative to politics as usual, and the Candidates’ Collaborative is committed to the principles of cooperation and dedicated to working together for the good of the community. To this end, the Collaborative has decided that a debate forum including all the candidates is important to ensuring a more democratic race, and is actively encouraging SF5Together to open its doors to all the candidates running in District 5.

On Wednesday, August 25th the District 5 Candidates’ will be holding a press conference to deliver a written request urging SF5Together to adopt an inclusive debate forum allowing all candidates to participate in their September debate.
