DNC2RNC call to action - a call to be ourselves

Enough is Enough! March for Direct Democracy! Todo para Todos!

What: DNC2RNC Arrival March from Columbus Circle to Union Square

Where: Columbus Circle

When: 5pm, Thursday, August 26th

Rather than representing the interests of the people, both Democrats and Republicans choose to build systems of violent exploitation. We have walked 258 miles from the Democratic National Convention and now we arrive at the Republican National Convention to say "Ya Basta!" Enough is Enough! As a symbol of reclamation of our city space, and as a gesture of solidarity with those silenced and oppressed, we will march for those who cannot be present, we will give a voice to the voiceless, a face to the faceless, and struggle to build direct democracy. In the spirit of Zapatismo we seek dignity, justice, housing, autonomy, education, health care, work and food for all.

We invite all people of varying risk levels to join us on Thursday, August 26, as the march reaches its final destination.

Permits have not been requested or granted because we do not need permission to unite as civil society. We will not take power, but exercise it to build democracy. After a brief gathering with food at Columbus circle the march will proceed down Broadway past Madison Square Garden, concluding at Union Square. The march will be escorted by a bike bloc organized by Times Up! bicyclists and accompanied by an inspiring and creative street theater piece performed by DNC2RNC marchers and allied affinity groups. In order to clearly present our message and to minimize harm to participants, we will act in the spirit of non-violence. We will attempt to de-escalate violence and, if we need to defend ourselves, we will do so non-violently.

The culmination of our march will be celebrated with rhythm, voices, and imagination. Please show your support by bringing friends and family to our arrival.

Throughout our month long march we have participated in a broad range of community events. As a characteristic finish to our march we will support South Bronx residents who are fighting to keep their community gardens from being bulldozed to make way for unaffordable housing. We will then march from Cortland Ave. and 159 St. in the South Bronx to Columbus Circle for the Arrival March.

Audio: Cedar, Peter, Giana and Cody
(24 minutes)

On August 16, 2004 radical folk musician and organizer Ryan Harvey, along with Cedar, Peter, Giana and Cody, called into Free Radio Santa Cruz from New Haven, CT to give an update on the DNC2RNC march.

People from all over the country are marching from the DNC which took place in Boston to the RNC which is taking place in New York.

Marchers are living, sleeping, eating and making decisions together.

Many actions have taken place on the march, such as a demonstration against the Seaborg corporation, singing Oppositionial Defiance Disorder inside Walmart, and chating, "While Your Shopping Bombs are Dropping" inside a shopping mall.

Food has been both donated and dumpstered. Seeds of Peace is helping to cook.

Members of the community are encouraged to donate money, food, medical supplies, skateboards, shoes and media coverage of the demonstration.

Street Threater is being organized in solidarity with Zapatistas. Street Medics are helping out all along the way. Decisions are made through concensus.

The march has been an experience in anarchist process. Leadership has emerged from lots of different people. The DNC2RNC is an example to the world that an anarchist community can exist.

Change the system!

We also hear, "Don't Just Vote" by Ryan Harvey followed by audio from a DNC2RNC video from the 16th day of the march from Boston to NYC.

On August 16, radical folk musician and organizer Ryan Harvey called into Free Radio Santa Cruz from New Haven, CT to give an update on the DNC2RNC march. (35 minutes / 32 megabytes)

Ryan and the rest of the DNC2RNC marchers went through relics of the Hurricane earlier in the day.

He has been working on the musical aspects of the march for the last few few months.

In addition to discussing the DNC2RNC march, Ryan also talks about writing songs, some of his inspirations, organizing as a youth in Towson, MD (which 'earned' him visits from the FBI), increased police repression (like shutting down activist art spaces), under-ground and above-ground activism, copyrights and distributing his music, organizing in locations all across the US, the US government's tactics for supressing dissent, knowing our history and being a folk musician.

After the interivew, you will hear Ryan Harvey's Open Song to George Bush.
