San Jose police shot and killed the son of a sheriff's deputy Thursday when he allegedly gestured toward officers with a knife after trying to steal a CD player from an East Side store.

Minutes before police opened fire near a Story Road strip mall, the officers tried to subdue the man with their Taser stun guns, a less-lethal option adopted by the entire patrol force after a Vietnamese woman was shot to death by police last year.

For reasons not immediately clear, both Taser shots were ineffective, leading to the fourth deadly San Jose police-involved shooting this year.

Authorities did not release the man's identity Thursday night, but relatives identified him as Johnnie Nakao, 21, of San Jose, the son of John Nakao, a 28-year veteran of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department.

...
Officers chased the man for about 300 yards before he ``turned around and came at the officers with a knife,'' said Sgt. Steve Dixon. A second Taser shot was fired at the man, but also failed. Both officers then opened fire.

By relatives' accounts, Johnnie Nakao lived a troubled life. Diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, he was haunted by a drug and alcohol addiction that recently landed him in jail for 90 days, said his grandmother, Sharon Jensen. He had entered a drug rehabilitation program but then left, she said.
...
Earlier this year, another man was killed in downtown San Jose during an encounter with another law enforcement agency. Rodolfo ``Rudy'' Cardenas, 43, was shot to death in February during a botched state Department of Justice pursuit of a fugitive parolee. The agent involved in his death was recently indicted on a manslaughter charge.

The San Jose officers involved in Thursday's fatal shooting were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations conducted by the department's internal affairs unit, the district attorney's office and the independent police auditor.
