Free Campouts At Medicine Lake and Condrey Mt. Threatened Public Forests

by Medicine Lake martens (southsiskiyou [at] riseup.net)
There are two hikes to wild places in Northern California in the next two weeks.
This weekend there is a campout and hike on the wild Siskiyou Crest in a threaten area in the Horse Heli timber Sale on public Land on the Klamath River

Then, on August 20th and 21st there will be a campout at the sacred and wild Medicine L:ake volcanic caldera. We will be exploring ice caves, old growth forest, lakes and glass lava flows in this public land where fire meets water. Help us Save Medicine Lake from Calpine Corporate's power lust.
Please foward to lists....

Free hikes and campouts to the Medicine Lake and the Siskiyou Crest.

Next Medicine Lake campout and hike
August 20th and 21 (no hike on the 22nd)

Come campout and hike in the amazing volcanic caldera at Medicine Lake and see the wild public forest that Calpine corporation plans to destroy for energy production.

The hike includes camping at Bullseye Lake, a wild area just across the road from Telephone Flat, hiking around glass lava flows, old growth forests, and ice caves; then hiking and relaxing next to the healing Medicine Lake. On the last hike we saw a baby pine marten, a blue herion and many other wild animals.

The Medicine Lake Highlands comprises the largest shield volcano on the continent and is home to old-growth forests, spotted owls, martens and many other rare species that roam the lava tubes, obsidian flows, large craters and waterways of the caldera. This area, used for healing and ceremony, is sacred to the Pit River, Modoc, Shasta, Karuk and Wintu tribes..

Though the area is all public land, Calpine would like to capitalize on the natural healing energy of this timeless volcanic ecosystem. Calpine's leases associated with this project cover 8 square miles. This sacred, wild area could be turned into miles of clearcuts (for transmission lines), toxic slump ponds, new roads, pipelines, and cooling towers. Native American Spiritual freedom, recreation, and the wild natural beauty of the area, along with California's largest spring system
are all threatened by the Bush's Energy Policy.

There is a hike also on September 11th woth KS Wild.
Contact Lesley@kswild or call 541 488-5789.

Please bring food, sleeping gear, and a bathing suit and towel. Medicine Lake is at 7,000 feet and nights can be cool.

Hike Threatened Ancient Forest In The Horse Heli Timber Sale, August 14th - 15th

On the second weekend in August, EPIC's Forest Watch will
host our fourth summer hike to endangered old-growth in the nearby Klamath National Forest. Near treeline, high on the steep Siskiyou Crest just south of the Oregon border and about thirty miles west of I-5, the proposed the Horse Heli old growth timber sale targets key ancient forest habitat vital for the Northern Spotted Owl, Goshawk and three species of salmon. The area is an important wildlife
habitat corridor which connects the Klamath Mountains to the southern Oregon and northern California Cascades. 1600 acres in size, the Forest Service claims that logging these big fire resistent trees will improve forest health but in reality will only add to the risk of catastrophic fire in the area. The Horse Heli sale has been
characterized as one of the worst in the Klamath.

We will leave from Arcata on Saturday afternoon, August
14th, and carpool out to the mid Klamath river, setting up camp for the evening. Sunday we'll head out to the Horse Heli sale, explore the logging plan and then hike along the adjacent Pacific Crest
Trail. We'll return Sunday evening.

Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will be provided but
hikers should also bring Sunday lunch, money for gas and food,
camping and light hiking gear. The caravan will meet on Saturday afternoon 3pm at the Arcata Co-op kiosk, on I st between 8th and 9th.

Please RSVP via e-mail or by calling EPIC Forest Watch at
822-TREK (8735).

We hope you can join us....

There is also an Earth First Rendezvou in the Biscuit Timber Sale on August27th-30th. Email: cascadiaef [at] cascadiarising.org or call Siskiyou Wild Action at 541 482-2640
