A hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, STANDER tells the true story of a policeman who turns against the law on a matter of principle. Tom Jane stars as André Stander, a South African homicide captain in the early 1980s who suffers a crisis of conscience for his involvement in apartheid and becomes one of the most notorious bank robbers in the country. He would also become something of a cult hero, along with accomplices Lee McCall (Dexter Fletcher) and Allan Heyl (David Patrick O’Hara). The stylish “Stander Gang” pulls off increasingly audacious jobs, but personal sacrifices take their toll as André is separated from his long-suffering wife (Deborah Unger) and father (Marius Weyers). Driven by Jane’s charismatic performance, STANDER is an entertaining caper movie with moral fiber. Rated R for violence, language, some sexuality and nudity. Writers: Ken Friedman, Bima Stagg. Director: Bronwen Hughes. (Canada/South Africa/UK 2003). Film 111 min. plus discussion.

Tom Jane also had the title role in the recent action film THE PUNISHER. Among her other credits, Bronwen Hughes directed the Ben Affleck-Sandra Bullock romantic comedy FORCES OF NATURE.
