In DIY porn, art cums before profit

by SUN (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
Do-It-Yourself dyke-porn panel discussion, 7/30.
Plus queer things 2 do.
Notes on July 30 Do-It-Yourself Porn Panel with "down home ma and pa feminist dirty dyke pornographers, Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano" of Sirvideo.com, plus Sex Positive Productions, and the crew of Working Girlz; on making "a sexy work of art" (versus the usual Hellay commercial crap);
at Artists' Television Access, sponsored by Ladyfestbayarea.org.

When I enter the small ATA theatre, it's jampacked with womyn (past, present or future). Finding no empty seat, I sit on the floor. I figure the crowding demonstrates the popularity of feminist porn.

Alas, not. Those womyn were sardining for the PREVIOUS event. After a break, when the porn event begins,
vacant seats appear. Perhaps more feminists might have stayed if organizers had used the soft-word "erotica", instead of blatantly saying "porn"? (As I write, the Vatican again attacks feminists.)
[ For BBC report on Vatican attack, please see:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3940719.stm ]

First question to panel, from moderator: How or where did you get into dyke porn? Answers include
Good Vibrations, Lusty Lady, On Our Backs, Redboard.

Question from womon in audience: Is there a "right kind of porn" to suit every womon, or will some womyn always avoid porn? Responses vary widely, including: If video is too graphic for you, read erotic fiction, or cartoon books, or fetishwear catalogs, or "whatever makes you hot". If something tempts YOU to masturbate, even your anthropology textbook, then it's porn for you, tho your peers yawn.

Question: Seek art or profit? Here all answers align: If you aim for profit, you may miss. So you may as well make what you really like, and hope that audiences share your passion. Get a day job, preferably in related fields of sexuality, art, technology, etc. To see how your work is going, you could show early portions of work in progress to fellow sex-positive dykes, and learn from their reactions.

When the D.I.Y. porn discussion ends, much of the audience leaves, apparently NOT interested in seeing dyke-porn for free. I'm amazed. Can you imagine men passing up free porn videos? Well, if the alternative was a live show, or actual participation....

We see part of WORKING GIRLZ, and all of SUGAR HIGH GLITTER CITY.
Each is excellent.

Saturday July 31, 7:30 pm-10 pm: Landmark Ceremony for the Redstone Labor Temple:
The Redstone Labor Temple will celebrate our historical landmark status July 31st with an evening of entertainment at the Lab 2940 16th Street in the Mission district. A dedication and presentation of the proclamation will be presented by a member of the Board of supervisors and union representatives that once used the building for their offices and the union hall.
Our celebration will include performances by the Labor Temple Chorus, Jaime Cortez, Tommi Aviocolli-Mecca, Barbara Heredia, the Rabbles and other artists that will represent the tenants and neighborhood populations. It is our hope to make people aware of the significance this building holds. In the 1930's a dockworkers strike paralyzed the city when the bodies of two strikers found near the Ferry building. The citizens of San Francisco joined the strikers by not shopping, working or traveling for one day. At the funeral thousands marched and lined the streets up market Street to the Redstone Building, which served as a Union Hall. The Redstone Labor Temple has been a part of an annual march by union workers at Labor fest. The Redstone Labor Temple Association is a new resource for the tenants in the building: Theatre Rhinoceros, El Teatro Esperanza, Luna Sea, Frameline and a host of other services as well as other Non-profit organization in the neighborhood.
Tickets: $10.00 to $100.00 donations (sliding scale) No one turned away for lack of funds! At The Lab, 2940 16TH Street near Mission Street.
