In the thread references were made to Reuters and the Drudge Report, but the truth of the matter is that reading the invented slogans and diolog they would like to have had actually said shows this site capable of just about anything; including inventing the news.
I am an activist who has has been monitoring the Free Republic for several years, and I have watched them call on fellow FReepers to skew unscientific polls with them linked in threads imploring, "FREEP THIS POLL!!!!" and other unethical practices. I was on the site originally as 'ferret' until the inevitable banning of me in April 2000, and I am currently on Libertypost.org, an open to all site with many FReeper exiles.
I have watched the site grow increasingly cultish, and go from a conservative news discussion site to a grass roots working engine alleging to be pro conservative, but that come second to Jim Robinson's favorite game of manipulating the news. Many FReepers have left or been banned in the wake of Robinson doctating the presidential canidate all on site can support, and one problem he faces is the lack of literacy and posting ability of newcomers to the site.
They have also been involved in harrassing Peace Fresno, and they are a presence all over the Internet and in real time "FReepings" of people and events they dislike.
Manufacturing pictures and presenting them as the real news item got them in troube already this election cycle. Apparently they did not learn a thing.
Other than being a support group for right wing nutcases, what is the relevance of the Freepers? Does anyone other than a right wing nutcase believe their garbage?
They are not to be underestimated, and this sort of game like they play with this picture will develop into a series of incidents like this they hope enough people buy to deny Kerry a chance to unthrone Bush.
The Fresno bunch (which admittedly is small) includes a woman whose ex-husband divorced her reportedly because she's certifiably nuts. This lady declared war on the local Republican Party after they decided to dump a local legislator after he "got lost" trying to find the Farm Bureau and got caught trolling for prostitutes. She also ramrods protests at our local Planned Parenthood clinics.
The founder of FR is a local, who I understand has had a checkered history. Another local member espoused the elimination of gays during an very unsuccessful run for Congress a few years ago. That individual poses as a clergyman and terrorism expert and reports are he spies for the Sheriff on local progressive groups.
All and all, a very sick bunch.

Moveon.org forums have been a favorite target of co-ordinated efforts by this group disrupting them, shutting them down with spam/hacking and high five-ing each other publicly about it at FR. The defensive measures at moveon action forums severely limit an open to all (by it's non-profit definition) platform for debate.
Some FR participants, and certainly by it's editorial prowess "Free Republic LLC" takes a proactive and incidious pride in condemning viewpoints which contain keywords which represent a threat to a position which ironically, in the long run, will promote anarchy.

On FreeRepublic.com, Corsi has, among other things, said that "ragheads" are "boy buggers"; referred to "John F*ing Kerry"; called Senator Hillary Clinton a "Fat Hog"; referred to her daughter as "Chubby Chelsie" Clinton; referred to Janet Reno as "Janet Rhino"; called Katie Couric "Little Katie Communist"; suggested Kerry was "practicing Judaism"; and expressed the wish that a small plane that had crashed into a building in Los Angeles had instead crashed into the set of NBC'S The West Wing, thereby killing actor Martin Sheen.
What's more, as an ACTIVIST web site, it should come as no suprise that they organize protests, etc. Activists don't just sit around and wait for good things to happen! The poll freeping you talk of is common on many left wing web sites also. In fact, it was started to counteract the left wing web sites who was doing it.
