Reclaim the Parks!: Modesto Aug 21st!

by DAAA Collective (modanarcho [at] yahoo.com)
Solidarity is needed in Modesto, as the homeless are still being harassed and driven out of some of the only parks left they can gather by police and churches. A day of direct action, and community strength!
When: August 21st
Where: Tower Park, 17th and G Street, Modesto CA. Time: 10AM - 5PM
Housing: Any Interested out of Towners can have housing/food/etc. We are looking for people to come and bring food to share, possible workshops, and discussions about their own personal experiences with working with homeless/police issues.

Sign Up/Email Us: modanarcho [at] yahoo.com, on the web at: http://www.geocities.com/modanarcho

Why Come to Modesto?:

Simply existing within public areas has been criminalized while being homeless, or so say the owners and protectors of property in the city of Modesto. While the churches close to Tower Park work to sign petitions to drive Food Not Bombs and the Good Samaritans out, the police are happy to drive out the homeless from the few parks we can still gather in. While the downtown is revamped by developers to make way for the bay area invasion, our rent continues to rise, and the new vision of Modesto is one that is without homeless. This process is carried out by making it illegal to be homeless, from getting food, to getting money, to finding a place to live. But the struggle for what is right in this city is not about illegality. Everyday we gather from dumpsters what the rich through away, we break into abandoned buildings because we need places to stay. This isn’t about illegality, this is about survival!

While some have called for letter writing, voting, and other means of achieving our goals, we are calling for direct action to be taken to get our point across to the public that the issues facing the homeless are real - and are not going away! It is also important for us to come together as a community of people, to celebrate and learn from each other, as we once again try and take on the powerful in a city that seems to care more about profit to be made from development, than the people that live and work within it.

ACTION IN THE PARK: Film Showings: Various films about homeless/police issues will be shown throughout the day.

Three meals, free clothes, toys, and jackets!

“Know Your Rights” Training: Various legal workers will talk and give advice on your legal rights in various situations with police.

March to Dinner Park!: We will be walking to a nearby park for dinner. Signs and banners will be provided, bring your own! Police out of parks! Permanent Shelter Now!

Massive flyering to public about the homeless situation in Modesto.

Try getting a fucking job, loser.

I actually do have a job, which I'm off to right now. And in fact, at the last emergency homeless shelter that was shut down this winter, over 50% of the poeple staying there had permenant jobs, and many more worked for labor ready, etc.

So, we're really not just talking about homeless people, we're talking about working class people without homes.

"you fucking loser", ...see but I'm not the one who dosen't know what I'm talking about.

ill be in stockton until september so i would be more than happy to help yall with this.
Instead of ridiculing and making yerself look stupid by saying negative un-empowering-TYPICAL- fascist retoric. Why dont you stop and take a look around you if you come from the community of Modesto. THERE IS NO PERMANANT SHELTER!!! And again, if you come from the community of MO-TOWN you, I, and others used to know that where "DITTOS" corner of J.st and 11th st. used to be the biggest squat, "excuse my french, 'cause this guy has probably never even heard of the term SQUAT", Modesto ever had. That's why you, me, and others never used to see homeless people, 'cause they had a place to live and they twore it down and put a corporate office there. Get yer facts straight copper!!!
