7/21 Jamie Spector Update

Hello Jamie supporters,
based on a conversation with Jamie's mom, then Jamie herself, here's
the latest update:
(please note that I wrote this stuff down after going to bed 3ish,
and getting up 8ish, so please excuse any possible discrepancies from
future reports, but you will get the most accurate info possible!!)

1) Jamie's "trial" on Wednesday morning in Tel Aviv

Based on a conversation w/ Jamie and Mom Spector, we have come to
the conclusion that the "democracy" Israel claims to be is a complete
joke! Yeah, I know thats shocking to you all.. So there had been no
ruling at this time, but here are a few things that happened in court:
· Neither Jamie nor her parents statements to the court were
allowed to be read
· Jamie wasn't really asked anything, and wasn't allowed to say
much
· The "secret evidence" the Israeli gov't uses to decide that
int'ls aren't allowed into Israel wasn't even at the court.
· The judge said she would review the evidence later (it was to
arrive at court 1 hour after hearing was to begin!) and that Jamie
should come back Friday for a decision.
· It was mentioned that Jamie first claimed she wasn't w/ ISM,
therefore she "lied at the airport" and they could keep her out of
Israel based on this alone.
· Jamie's lawyer, Yael, requested to see the evidence, but
instead was handed a piece of paper stating that there was evidence to keep Jamie out, and that was enough.
· Yael then requested to speak to the author of this piece of
paper, but was told she couldn't.
· Jamie said the whole thing was a mockery of what a
democratic, legal, just court hearing should have been, from the
escorts getting Ann & Jamie to the courthouse 30 minutes late to the
lack of democracy.

2) Ann Petter Update (Jamie's co-detainee!)
After 28 days in detention, and several court hearings, they have
decided to allow Ann into Israel. My report seems to be a bit
different from what others have reported, but here's what Jamie & Mom
Spector told me:
· Ann is allowed in under the following conditions:
o Only in Israel, can't travel to Occupied Territories
o Not allowed to be any where near any protests
o Not allowed to be anywhere where violence can potentially
break out
o Not allowed to work w/ activist groups (ISM specific I assume)
o Must post $10,000 bail, which will be returned to her if she
doesn't break guidelines given to her!
· Not sure what Ann is going to do.. She has until Friday AM to
decide.

3) What's going on in ISM Palestine?
I don't many details handy, but we are under the understanding that
the worst area right now in the West Bank is in Nablus. One young man
was hot to death while an int'l ISM was standing close by. Another
young boy was almost shot for throwing rocks, but the soldier got
stopped when he saw he was being watched by int'ls. On Friday, there
are to be busloads of Palestinians from all over the West Bank to try
to get into Jerusalem for Friday Prayers. Keep in mind most of these
people aren't generally allowed to leave their hometown, and getting
into Jerusalem will be a huge victory for all. Please check out

4) Whats going on in Bay Area that you can support?
As previously mentioned, the Justice in Palestine Coalition is
planning to protest the wall, and speak about the recent
International Court of Justice decision this Saturday the 24th at
24th & Mission BART station in SF. We will begin set-up at 9AM, and
be there most of the day passing out literature and protesting. Jamie
REALLY wants her folks to be supportive of this work, so please stop
by Saturday.

Also, a few of us are still actively working to help jamie by working
on press, contacting people, sending out updates, etc..
