Sat. 7/24 & 7/31: Oakland Rallies Against Gentrification & Wal-Mart, for Housing and Jobs
Train Station Rally THIS SATURDAY!
Come out and fight for affordable housing and African-American history this Saturday at the 16th and Wood Train Station.
Saturday, July 24th 12 noon - 2pm
Corner of 16th and Wood (where 16th St. dead ends in West Oakland)
This is an historic campaign: a growing coalition of community activists, organizations and our allies are joining up to demand that all new housing going up in Oakland include housing that regular working people can afford. The developers of this project are building market-rate housing out of the reach of West Oaklanders. We are also working to get the old train station building put aside as a museum for the Pullman Porters and for community use. PLEASE DO NOT MISS THIS RALLY!

JOBS ACTION COMING UP ON JULY 31st
Just Cause has been sponsoring a sister campaign called Economic Security is Community Security and it is starting to pick up steam! Come through to their first big action in a couple weeks. Here is the info:
Guess who's moving in next door?
Oakland is set to open the biggest retail development in its history, with Wal-Mart as its anchor retailer. Is Wal-Mart, a corporation known for racist and sexist hiring and firing policies, union-busting, low wages and for squeezing out small businesses a good neighbor? Why does Wal-Mart get our tax dollars to locate in Oakland, but we get nothing in return?
We want reparations from these corporations!
JOIN US TO SAY NO TO CORPORATE WELFARE, YES TO COMMUNITY BENEFITS!

SECTION 8 VICTORY IN ALAMEDA
Although Just Cause was not involved in this fight, we want to make sure everyone knows about the great victory that Section 8 tenants had in the city of Alameda recently. After a several month fight, and with the help of groups like Campaign for Renters Rights, and lawyers from legal organizations like Bay Area Legal Aide and Sentinel Housing, over 250 families were able to turn back an attempt to cut off their section 8 vouchers and put them out in the street. Congratulations to everyone involved and lets stay vigilant to turn back cuts in Oakland and make HUD at the federal level reverse all of its cuts. Here's last weeks brief victory note from the organizers at CRR:
We won. Today we met with the housing director in Alameda who has just returned from Washington. All 256 families have been fully reinstated into the Section 8 program and all evictions have been stopped. This is a huge victory. Tommorrow we have a tenants meeting and probably Tuesday's Rally for the Children will be a victory rally. Mothers like Malika, Kenija, Brenda, Patricia, Shiela, Meika have forced back the powers that be. More detailed report to follow. fight to win! with direct action.
