Bush-Cheney, Ken Lay, Tom DeLay, MTBE and Big Oil
The price of oil may reach $50 a barrel and American imports of oil are growing, yet Congress has not acted to pass President Bush's energy bill. Don't the Republicans want to reward Big Oil while they still control the White House? Yes, but MTBE lawsuits against the oil companies are the big prize, the deal breaker!
To understand the rape and looting of America
by Bush-Cheney it is instructive to look at
what happened with Bush's energy plan (drafted
by Cheney and Ken Lay, subject of FOIA lawsuits).

For several years Bush has repeated his mantra,
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/06/20040624-7.html
"You know, we need Congress to pass the energy plan I
submitted. It's a plan that says loud and clear, for
the sake of economic security and for the sake of
national security, we must be less dependent on
foreign sources of energy. And we can find energy at
home in environmentally friendly ways. We can do a
better job of conservation. We can come up with
alternative sources of energy."
Over and over again, Bush repeats this complaint.
Even as oil heads to $50 a barrel and import
dependency increases, and "Peak Oil" draws nearer...
So why hasn't Congress passed the bill, or a bill?
One word: MTBE.
Congress would have passed a bill except that
Congresscritter Tom DeLay of Texas refuses to
pass an energy bill unless the oil companies
are absolved of responsibility for MTBE cleanup.
The economic security of the US is hostage to
this.

MTBE is a carcinogen that has polluted water supplies
all over America. Cleanup will cost unknowable
amounts! In just one state, New Hampshire, 40,000
wells are polluted. In California an oil company
settled with a municipality by agreeing to pay
damages and to build and operate a new water treatment
plant indefinitely.
Bush-Cheney want the richest US companies to be able
to TOTALLY walk away from their MTBE responsibilities,
which may be as big or bigger than the asbestos
problem!
And until we give them what they want all we will hear
is Bush whining "Congress MUST pass my energy bill."
The cynicism and hypocrisy is breath-taking. And
remember, this is just one small facet of the
rape and looting of America: Big Oil companies
extract your money, pollute your land and water,
and vamoose. The energy bill's tax credits, drilling
rights, allowances or any of the other giveaways
it might one day contain are insignificant in
comparison to the MTBE issue. And remember: all
of these men -- Bush, Cheney, DeLay and Lay -- are
currently either indicted or under investigation
for a variety of things (Plame investigation,
bribery, Enron, campaign donations, etc.)
by Bush-Cheney it is instructive to look at
