Signature gatherers try to hide Nader’s name on petitions

by repost
A mysterious pair of men were gathering signatures on a petition Monday outside the Kroger store on Charleston’s West Side — apparently in an effort to get independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader on West Virginia’s ballot in November.
One of the men told at least two people, including a Gazette reporter, that the petitions were not for Nader. But Nader supporters were gathering signatures outside a Dunbar Kroger store on Sunday, and one woman at the West Side Kroger said she saw the petitions, and they were for Nader.

Helen Lanham said one of the men asked her if she was a registered voter and whether she would sign a petition to “get a minority on the ballot.” She asked who it was, and they “hemmed and hawed” and wouldn’t tell her.

They had the name of the candidate covered up with a pencil on the petition, Lanham said. She said she moved the pencil aside and saw it was for Nader.

...

One of the men, who had a large clipboard full of petitions, refused to tell a Gazette reporter who the signatures were for, but denied they were for Nader. He then asked if the Gazette was distributed “across Virginia.”

“My coordinator said I shouldn’t say any more until I talk to him,” the man said. When asked whether he could put the reporter in contact with the coordinator, the man said he would go to his car and check with his partner. Instead, they drove away.

Likely this was the result of a scenario like this :

1) A paid sig gatherer got sick and tired of the fascist Dems screaming from across a parking lot, "Don't sign that! Don't sign that! Get away from him!" or else screaming *in his / her face,* "I WILL NOT have Nader on the ballot! No I WON'T!! You should be ashamed of yourself!" etc. The average Dem is treating volunteers this way with no respect at all for what a Democracy is about - freedom of choice. They want to control who can be ALLOWED on the ballot.

I actually have people around me come over and sign just out of disgust at the way I'm being treated by the fascist Democrats. Adult yuppies are making rude accusations, yelling, screaming, treating me like dirt.

And I'm not paid.

Paid signature gatherers are in it for the money. No campaign in the entire US only works from volunteers except perhaps the P&F, which only exists in CA, for the most part.

I don't see why this detail of an incident with *one person* is worthy of the 'global' section on here. Are the one or two wayward signature gathers in the f**king *Nader* campaign really up there with the decisions on the wall in Israel / Palestine???? Jesus. Are you guys really that desparate to take down Nader, too? Or was this just so fascinating that you felt everyone must know how this one person in the United States behaved?

If there was some sort of pattern, sure. But show me. Show me the pattern. I'll be the first one to publically dress down anyone involved and spread the info.

But look at the context . . . Democrat SUV driving Kerry supporters screaming at socialist and Green volunteers in the streets just asking for signatures. Then tell me what this is really about. Exposing those evil paid sig gatherers? Exposing those evil Nader volunteers? They sure do tell lies and do underhanded stuff these days! I gotta tell ya, it's a good thing we've got indymedia to expose those lying and cheating Nader supporters . . . all 1 of them.
by what!!
"I'm not paid."

Isnt it something like a dollar to a dollar fifty a signature? By taking signatures for free your undercutting the people who use signature gathering to pay rent.
