JULY 17, 2004 JUSTICE VIGIL FOR TRAN/CARDENAS

WHAT: On July 17, 2004, the Coalition for Justice and Accountability will sponsor a mass beginning at 10:00 am at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral and justice vigil at 11:00 am at Plaza de Cesar Chavez to remember the tragic deaths of Cau Tran, Rudy Cardenas and other members of the community who have been wrongfully shot and killed by law enforcement.

WHERE: The mass will begin at 10:00 am at St. Joseph’s Cathedral 80 South Market Street, San Jose, CA 95113. Immediately following the mass, the justice vigil will begin at approximately 11:00 am at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, South Market Street and Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95113 (directly across the street from the San Jose Fairmont Hotel).

WHO: Speakers at the vigil will include representatives from Cau Tran’s family, a member of Rudy Cardenas’ family, a member of the Boyd family, a member of the Amaya family and a member of the Rosenberg family. All of these families have lost loved ones at the hands of law enforcement. Latino and Vietnamese cultural performers will also be featured. Members of the community concerned about police brutality and police shooting of the innocent are encouraged to attend. The October 22nd Coalition Stolen Lives Wall will also be on display at the justice vigil. The Stolen Lives wall chronicles the alarming number of deaths at the hands of law enforcement across the nation.

WHY: Cau Tran was shot and killed by a San Jose Police officer on July 13, 2003 as she stood in her kitchen with a Vietnamese vegetable peeler in her hand. Rudy Cardenas was mistaken for a wanted parolee and shot in the back by a State Narcotics Agent while pleading for his life on February 17, 2004. Rudy died at San Jose Medical Center on February 17, 2004. A grand jury investigation into the death of Rudy Cardenas is scheduled to begin on July 19, 2004 at 161 North First Street, Department 22, San Jose, CA 95113. The District Attorney’s Office has requested that the Grand Jury be open to the public.
