COME TO THE RALLY TO SUPPORT SAFE & STRONG RENT CONTROL ON JULY 12, NOON, CITY HALL

pdf Version of July 12 Rally Flyer available online at http://www.sftu.org/hot.html

About 150 tenants turned out on April 24 to plan for stronger rent control by reforming how the Rent Board Commission (the Board which oversees and enforces the rent control law). Attendees debated various methods of reforming how the Commissioners get appointed, with a particular goal of ensuring that tenants are adequately represented on our Rent Board. Currently, tenants hold a minority of the seats on the Board (2 of 5), while we make up 2/3 of the city! Also, the 5 members currently are all appointed by the Mayor, and serve at the Mayor's "pleasure." Tenants at the April 24 meeting chose to propose a charter amendment for November to create a new Rent Board which would have 7 members, 4 appointed by the Supervisors and 3 by the Mayor. The new Board will be representative of the tenant/property owner makeup in San Francisco: since there's 2/3 tenants in SF. the Board will have 2/3 tenants on it.

We now need to get six Supervisors to sponsor this proposed Charter Amendment–Get Involved: Call 282-6656 to find out how you can help or go to Rent Board Reform Section to learn more and see how you can help and to contact your Supervisor to support strong rent control through Rent Board Reform.
