From the depths of Oakland’s underground, Company of Prophets brings 5th dimensional tag-team rhyme schemes and unparalleled turntablism to Hip-Hop’s fragile surface. Company of Prophets, comprised of emcees (and MOCHA teaching artists) Brutha Los and Rashidi Omari, and DJ Treatunice, first came to international attention in 1999, leading protest with song at the WTO protests in Seattle. From 2000-2002 the crew established themselves as one of the Bay Area’s premiere Hip-Hop bands with their monthly showcase of urban culture and politics, Collective Soul. During Company of Prophets' performance, join MOCHA artists in a Lines To Music lesson that pairs drawn and painted (with hand-held brushes and paint-soaked feet) lines to the "line" of the musical journey. Dance your way into a work of art!
About The Series:
Music & Art at MOCHA combines interactive, family-friendly performances with hands-on art projects in the courtyard of historic Swan's Market in Old Oakland. Audiences are encouraged to create works of art while listening to the musical performances, exploring visual art projects that underscore the musical traditions of the performers.
These workshops take place from 1-3pm on the last Sundays of the month in June, July and August. Donations are accepted, no one turned away for lack of funds.
