DIY Video Production Workshop
Sat-Sun, August 14-15, 10am-5pm
$100, (or $80 if you make less than $20k/year, see below)
Day 1: at Femina Potens, 465 South Van Ness @ 16th, San Francisco (Day 2 we'll be at a location 2 blocks away)
Learn the basics of pre-production, digital video production, and postproduction, and make a 3-minute movie you can take home with you. During Day 1, Instructors will provide a list of starter topics (some narrative, some documentary), and students will choose one project to pursue as a group and crew. Day 1 will cover preproduction and field production basics, Day 2 will cover interview lighting and postproduction. Each student takes home a zine, curriculum materials, a VHS copy of the class movie, and a list of friends who can crew your next project. Emphasis is on video activism + video production on the super-cheap for Mission kids, punks, queers, video newbies, and those itching to tell a good story.
Topics covered:
Basics of preproduction - how to nail down your topic, research, find your subjects, draft a script, and plan the nitty gritty of a low-budget digital production.
Planning DIY projects - how to bring your costs way down. We'll talk about how much projects usually cost, what they can cost, and how to keep quality high on the cheap.
Basics of digital video production - the most important things to know for lighting, sound, and camera work. Includes hands-on time with two different cameras.
Basics of postproduction - working on Final Cut Pro, we'll walk through nonlinear editing basics, and edit and output the class' 3-minute movie.
To sign up:
We are still accepting students. Class size limit of 10.
To reserve your spot, send a check for $100 to:
Jennifer Gilomen
Bay Area Video Coalition
2727 Mariposa, 2nd Floor
San Francisco, CA 94110
Please put your phone number and email address on the check. We will notify you upon receipt. We will also contact you with final class details on Monday, August 9.
If you make less than $20,000/year, you can pay $80. But we're broke, too, and the class materials are expensive, so please don't abuse our scholarship. Enclose a note stating your name, occupation, and contact information for your employer (if you have one).
