A Visible Voice for Peace in Fresno

by Mike Rhodes (MikeRhodes [at] Comcast.net)
What happens when a group of Peace activists hold a regular rally on one of the busiest street corners in Fresno? They get noticed.

A Visible Voice for Peace in Fresno
By Mike Rhodes
July 2, 2004

Lifestyle Furniture is located where the action is in Fresno. They are on the Southeast corner of Shaw and Blackstone, better known in the community as the peace corner. On the first Friday of every month Peace Fresno supporters gather on the peace corner with their signs, flags, and music. They are a visible voice for peace from 4:30 PM until whenever they decide to disband. During their presence on the corner you can hear a lot of drivers honking their approval, there are many smiles, and support to end the war in Iraq. Shaw and Blackstone is one of the busiest intersections in town and was chosen because the site allows Peace Fresno to get its message out to thousands of people in a single afternoon.

But there has been a price to pay for having a public presence and advocating for peace on the corner of Shaw and Blackstone. Lifestyle Furniture told Peace Fresno not to use their parking lot while they held their rally. Then, to emphasis the point, they brought in a tow truck to haul away peace activists cars. The tow truck would sit and wait for somebody to pull into the lot and join the peace rally. They would then pull up behind the car and start the process to tow it away. It didn’t matter that the lot was empty, they would tell people that they were going to tow the car if it wasn’t immediately moved.

At today’s rally, the struggle with Lifestyle Furniture escalated a notch when the Fresno Police Department sent an officer to the rally. He was there at the request of the furniture store because the Peace Fresno banner was on their property by one inch. The absurdity of the situation was lost on the officer as he explained that the banner would have to be moved one inch to the Northwest. There are rapes and murders taking place in this town and the FPD has time to harass Peace Fresno because the manager from Lifestyle Furniture thinks a banner needs to be moved one inch?

Peace Fresno has also had to endure the absolute insanity of the Free Republic that regularly sets up on the Southwest corner of Shaw and Blackstone. Jim Robinson (head Freeper) was there today with a handful of his faithful. For a well funded national group that is headquartered in Fresno, they have never been able to mobilize more than a handful of people to support their cause. Perhaps the theme War is Peace does not appeal to a lot of people.

Peace Fresno is also the target of a vicious disinformation campaign right here on this very Indymedia site. Every event they announce is met with a barrage of disinformation. Comments are posted that tell readers that the event has been moved or canceled. Imaginary potlucks are posted in the calendar section, marches are called, photos altered, and death threats made. Who is responsible? The Free Republic? The Joint Terrorism Task Force? Who knows?

The editors of Indymedia remove misinformation, terrorist threats, and other inappropriate postings as soon as it is found. If you see a posting about a Peace Fresno event and you want to check out the validity of the information - go to their web site at www.peacefresno.org . The correct information will be available there.

§The Lifestyle Furniture parking lot

This is the parking lot on a typical Friday afternoon. Lifestyle Furniture is unnecessarily hostile to Peace Fresno activists participating in their first amendment right to free speech.

Why can’t the Free Republic get people to attend their pro war rallies?

From comments I've seen on the Freeper site, the furniture store's owner or management are supporters of Free Republic, and are trying to force Peace Fresno to leave Blackstone and Shaw.

You know what - as soon as the broader nation hears about this, they're totally on your side. I watched this movie with my relatives in Colorado Springs, which has become quite quite conservative, yet the theater was full during a matinee on Thursday. We discussed the Peace Fresno part later, and everyone reacted to the segment in the theater. You guys are really brave to hold up your end against such harrassment. I've had several conversations with conservatives lately where I got them to express some anti-Iraq intervention/anti-Bush sentiment.

Funny how the US Constitution is selectively applied by Peace Fresno. So the business owners of Lifestyle Furniture have no right to say how their private property is used? And when they kick pro-terrorist Peace Fresno supporters off their property, that's a violation of free speech?

Intolerance is the new theme of the Left, apparently.

Please be accurate in your reporting. The Free Republic gathering on July 2nd was attended by 20 supporters of the United States troops. They held signs expressing gratitude for the service of Veterans and current members of the armed forces. They registered voters and were warmly received by hundreds of passersby, including dozens of members of Fresno's law enforcement community and Fire Department, who waved and smiled.

It was a moving and appropriate tribute to those who defend the freedom of the citizens of the United States, including those who choose to express hatred by protesting against her troops.

There's nothing insane about the Free Republic getting together on a corner to express their views. KMJ had one of them on the air during the protest, and he made more sense to me than anything on the anti-war protesters' signs.

What's insane is Peace Fresno trying to get an opposing viewpoint silenced by accusing them of crimes as serious as "death threats" without the least concern for facts.

the constitution ... is meant to apply to everyone as a whole, not selective members of a community. If this was an issue of protesting and not just with Peace Fresno, then the Free Republic counterdemonstrations would get the same level of 'attention.' However, this attention is only directed towards Peace Fresno.

Leaving that aside, as I understand, Peace Fresno didn't park in their parking lot, they only occupied the sidewalk which is public space and 1 inch of the landscaping in front of their store ... hardly impedeing the stores supposed 'constitutional right to profit.'

From what I've seen of Peace Fresno, they wouldn't say anything without the documentation to back it up.

from what i understand Peace Fresno isn't protesting against troops. they're protesting against war violence in the hopes of saving the lives of troops.

I was spotted again in both St. Paul and Minneapolis with my
“PEACE FRESNO “ T-shirt. I was wearing it so appropriately
on the 4th of July.
Yes, Fahrenheit 911 has brought
Attention to the pathetic behavior of the neon’s in Fresno.
* People are surprised and saddened what George Bush, his
Friends and the Patriot Act have done to this country.
** Those outrage are democrats, republicans, independents,
green parties, non-committed, and people who don’t vote.
* I just direct them to the Peace Fresno website so the can
see what happens when Bush morons take over.

At LifeStyleFurniture we refrain to show affiliation to any side of any political issues. Our response is that of non-involvement. We have repeatedly asked the representatives from Peace Fresno not to use our property for their demonstration. The corner of Blackstone and Shaw is public property, the parking lot is our private property. Peace Fresno has NOT been treated uniquely. We have asked many groups NOT to use our parking lot for their promotions. We do NOT allow any individual or group use our parking lot for anything other than LifeStyle Furniture business. In addition to the affiliation issues, we do not want the extra liabilty risk involved. We reserve to right to use our property for the sole purpose of operating our business. Our parking is reserved for our customers and employess only. Once again; We do NOT support ANY political causes and only wish to show NO AFFILIATIONS.

A memo to Jason Gobeli--you need to inform Free Republic (the group who pickets on the SW corner) that (1) you are not acting on their behalf and harassing the PeaceFresno folks and (2) that they're not welcome on your property either. Jim Robinson, who is the "leader" of Free Republic, frequently makes the statement on their website that you are one of their supporters.
by Pelon
One thing you forgot Jason, the problem with your stance is that Peace Fresno has, for months, been using any parking lot than yours. So, tell me, how does a signpole that takes up 1 square inch, 1 inch from the 'alleged' public/private property line impede your business. Simple, it doesn't. Get a PR person because you obviously aren't capable of whitewashing your own bullshit.
by Steve Malm
I question your wisdom as a manager. From a purely business perspective, every time you call the police for some imagined slight by demonstrators who ARE NOT using your parking lot, who are not harassing your customers, and who have made every effort to seek harmony between your business needs and the larger societal needs of free speech and dissent, you are creating a public impression of involvement, of disapproval of the right to express a political opinion publicly. Although you claim noninvolvement and a desire for impartiality, the impression you create is one of pure antagonism.

Peace Fresno and the people that support it is composed of CSUF faculty, teachers, ministers, social workers, attorneys, law students, salespeople, and many others from all walks of life. Oh yes, and all of us buy furniture. Word is spreading fast that you are anything but tolerant and receptive.

Who would want to do business with someone like that?

Think it over.

I wonder how long it will be before the Freepers send their junior henchmen the "Protest Warriors" over to challenge PeaceFresno's vigils?
