Six years after the Acteal massacre of 45 indigenous people by paramilitary groups in the Chiapas Highlands, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) leaves behind 8,000 internally displaced refugees. They are those who fled into makeshift refugee camps in order to escape paramilitary violence. Because those paramilitaries still roam the Highlands with impunity, the refugees cannot return to their homes or work their fields to grow food. The Red Cross has moved on to Iraq, creating a food and medical emergency in the autonomous Zapatista county of San Pedro Polho, where there are 8 refugee camps.
The Chiapas Support Committee has recently received a letter from Polho requesting that we do fundraising for this emergency situation. This is an international emergency relief effort in the United States, Latin America and Europe for food and medical relief.
