Attorney: Officer acted appropriately in case in which man died

MEQUON, Wis. - The attorney for a Mequon police officer who transported a 20-year-old man who died in custody last weekend says he is confident the officer acted appropriately.

"I'm confident that under the circumstances he did nothing inappropriate," attorney Michael F. Hart said Thursday of Officer Gregory Klobukowski.

Authorities and Hart have declined so far to say whether it was Klobukowski or another officer who put a high-tech respirator over Matthew J. Sheridan's head Saturday, apparently believing it was a spit hood, a device to shield officers from saliva.

The hood that was used covers the head and neck and is designed to protect against chemical and biological agents.
