Israeli camerman beaten by Border Police at fence protest

MK Ahmed Tibi (Hadash-Ta'al) was treated at A-Ram medical center for tear gas inhalation; several other people sustained similar injuries. Tibi was reported to be in good condition.

Avisat was also taken for medical treatment after he lost consciousness at the scene.

The Border Police troops clashed with hundreds of Palestinians and left-wing activists at the roadblock, with demonstrators throwing stones as police used tear gas and stun grenades to hold them back.

Six people were arrested at the protest, including, police said, an Israeli who was detained for throwing an ax at officers. Other protestors reportedly threw small steel hammers at a police vehicle.

Police said that officers tried to force the stone-throwing protestors back into the A-Ram neighborhood.

Gush Shalom chairman Uri Avnery said that the protest had been quiet and included several MKs and Palestinian clerics. Participants had walked down the main road in A-Ram and along the fence route, Avnery said, when "suddenly, without prior warning, the police began throwing dozens of stun grenades."

Jerusalem police said, however, that the protest was illegal, and that demonstrators had lost control, throwing stones and smashing security cameras.
