MEDIA ADVISORY
For Immediate Release
IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES FIGHT BACK AGAINST INS/ICE IMMIGRATION RAIDS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA
Who: Community leaders from the Bay Area’s immigrant communities
What: Press Conference in front of the ICE/INS building
Where: 630 Sansome St. at Washington St., in front of the ICE/INS building
When: Wednesday, June 23 at 9:30 a.m.
Despite being a city of refuge and in the face of growing community outrage, San Francisco and its residents fell victim to two more federal immigration raids in the Mission District. These raids follow a similar raid on May 6th that resulted in San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors issuing a declaration denouncing such raids. Community and political leaders from Bay Area immigrant communities will come together to take a stand against ongoing immigration raids and inform immigrants that they have rights and resources at their disposal. A delegation of community representatives will also be sent into the INS/ICE offices to present community demands to Federal officials.
Our demands are:
stop all raids
that the city denounce the raids
that the police not cooperate with the INS
stop violating the human rights of immigrants who are under custody of the INS
Similar raids by federal agents took place a year ago in S.F.’s Chinatown, as well as in the last couple of months in San Jose and Sacramento, with immigrant communities terrified of going back to work in the weeks following the raids.
According to immigration activist Reneé Saucedo of La Raza Centro Legal, “Why is the federal government spending valuable resources on targeting hardworking immigrants? These are husbands, mothers, sons working hard to earn a living; they’re clearly not terrorists. These raids are a form of terrorism against our communities by the federal government.”
It is clear that Federal agents are overstepping the scope of their power and conducting random sweeps whenever they have an opportunity. Those deported could have defended themselves against this abuse of power but like many immigrants, they did not realize that they have rights. Immigration Attorney Kevin Pimentel of API Legal Outreach states, “Every individual has rights regardless of immigration status. In this war against immigrants everybody needs to be informed and ready to defend themselves and their families.”
