Golden Gate Park is Under Attack

by Stephen Willis (savegoldengatepark [at] yahoo.com)
The deYoung Museum and billionaire financier F. Warren Hellman have completely demolished the NorthEast Pedestrian Tunnel, and partially demolished the 108-year-old SouthWest Tunnel, although Superior Court Judge James Warren is still considering whether the garage project is legal. They plan to demolish all three pedestrian tunnels, to circumvent the court and destroy the very features of the Park that we are sueing the City to save!!

If malicious vandals invaded the Park and destroyed two historic landmarks and left the spray paint of some street gang, the FBI would be on the case in no time. Hellman's Group issued a time line that will doom the remaining tunnels unless citizens intervene and by necessity, defend the site from further destruction.

(San Francisco) -- Golden Gate Park, considered by many Americans to be a national treasure, is under attack by the very people who pretend to be revitalizing it, the Friends of Rec and Parks, Warren Hellman and the de Young Museum.

The deYoung Museum Board of Trustees, along with the Directors of the Fine Arts Museums launched a media campaign declaring a final court victory with the lifting of a preliminary injunction against garage construction on March 25, 2004. The corporate media doesn't question their self-serving misinformation. However, the real court decision is to be issued within two weeks.

A wreckless decision was issued by the Court of Appeals on March 25, based on assurances that no irreversible damage would befall the Music Concourse area. It is clear that Hellman's group is used to lying and getting their way. They have literally taken the Music Concourse, and no one at City Hall seems to care that they are destroying priceless cultural history.

This is a public park. And the corporate interests behind the garage and the deYoung could be stopped in their tracks with a court ruling within two short weeks.

The March 12th preliminary injunction was issued based on the likelihood that the project will be found in violation of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and Prop J, 1998.

Meanwhile, Hellman's contractor, Swinerton Builders, keep demolishing history that belongs to the public. Garage backers perpetrated a fraud on the voters and the court and now they expect the public to just let them have the park. See what they have done.

Hellman and his Music Concourse Community Partnership claim that the tunnels were to be removed anyway, by the Rec and Parks Dept.

This is a crime taking place against the Commons.

This is malicious destruction of public park property, and the mayor says he doesn't care.

Our engineer says this tunnel has to be completely rebuilt. Hope Hellman and the Music Concourse Community Partnership have the money set aside, as they asserted in court. We have seen no such fund anywhere.

None of the destruction in the concourse indicates anything other than plans for a comple makeover. Think: Union Square. That's what the deYoung Museum director, Harry Parker has in mind for his new auto-centered design.

Bechtel veteran Dick Young was hired by Warren Hellman to do a hit job on the Park. The public is left uninformed by the local corporate media.

Don't ever forget that when you quit caring about the commons, there will always be someone, or some corporation, who will gladly step in to take care of it for you.

There is big money in privatization of public resources. Look at what happened to the Soviet Union...and to Iraq.

I lived out there next to the park for nine years. I spent a lot of time around the concourse, taking friends and visitors to the park. Those "wonderful" tunnels you are so worried about were falling apart years ago, they were not seismically sound, and worst of all, they dripped constantly in the rain and vagrants slept in them all the time. They were nasty and need to go. Good riddance. The new concourse will be quite nice, with a new museum and a new academy of science. There will less parking in the park as there will be the garage. That will remove 800 parking spaces above. I can tell you first hand about all the cars parking on the residential streets because there was inadequate parking for the visitors. And no, everyone will not and should not have to take public transportation. It's an urban park, not a wilderness zone. And where do the "activists" get the idea that THEY are the only ones who are entitled to use the east end of the park? If you want to skate, then go to the west end where no one else is in the way. You need to learn to share and realize that GG park is for everyone, not the chosen few.

=v= It's true that some of the tunnels have gotten unpleasant, but pedestrian tunnels need pedestrians, and there's been little foot traffic during all this construction. Conveniently enough for the garage project, the park also hasn't kept them very clean lately, either.

If you dig through some newspapers from 1997 and earlier, though, you'll find the usual "fun day in the park" human interest photos showing families, entertainers, etc., enjoying the tunnels.

Broaden your vision. Ask why the tunnels got so conveniently shabby, just right when somebody found it profitable to destroy them.

You know what, the Statue of Liberty is just a moldy old statue, maybe they should tear that down too. Hell- you can't even see her tits.

These so-called historical artifacts and pieces of our history are just worthless in this modern age. So yesterday. And you know, if you have to take public transit to get somewhere, what's the point, I got better things to do with my time. For instance, right now, I need to get my fat lazy ass off the couch for another beer. Later!
This piece of work is what unquestioningly passes for information, when published in the SF Chronicle.

To portray our coalition as a couple of disgruntled anti-car wingnuts, when our public interest litigation represents thousands of San Franciscans, is highly disingenuous.

If the City and Warren Hellman weren't worried about an unfavorable ruling from Judge Warren, they wouldn't be moving so frantically to destroy the tunnels.

The route they're chosing by demolishing these historic treasures which you so casually denigrate, will be a stark reminder for many years to come of what kind of men these are. These strangers who comprise the Music Concourse Community Partnership. Does Prop J give them the power to manage and control Golden Gate Park? It sure looks like it.

Where do they derive the authority to demolish these historic tunnels?? Answer that one.
