Parents of Rachel Corrie in Sacramento on June 10

by Dan Bacher
Craig and Cindy Corrie, the parents of Rachel Corrie, will appear in Sacramento on Thursday, June 10, 7 p.m., at the Newman Center.
***** PRESS RELEASE *****

"In the Footsteps of Our Daughter"
The parents of Rachel Corrie speak out

Craig and Cindy Corrie will speak in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area June 10-14, 2004, and will be available for interviews and personal appearances.

On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement, was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer while engaging in nonviolent action to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home in Rafah, where more than 1200 Palestinians have lost their homes in the current month alone (May, 2004).  Since then, her parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie, have sought to promote understanding of their daughter's quest and the issues that took her there.

The Corries have traveled to Rafah, met with Israeli, Palestinian and American officials, and visited the community where Rachel stayed in Rafah.  The Israeli government claims that Rachel's death was an accident.  However, witnesses whom Israeli investigators refuse to interview dispute this claim.  Israel has also refused to permit an outside investigation.

Rachel's Congressional representative, Brian Baird of Seattle, Washington, has introduced a resolution calling for a U.S. government investigation into her death, and her parents are seeking support for this resolution.  All SF Bay Area representatives have co-sponsored the resolution, except for Tom Lantos, Nancy Pelosi and Ellen Tauscher.

The Corries will be speaking about Rachel and their own experiences in seeking to understand the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
