80 Cops Watching 40 non-violent demonstrators is no joke; it is a tragic waste of money

by Police accountability
The money wasted this morning on the unnecessary heavy police presence could have been spent on programs for the homeless, abused women shelters, senior services etc, etc, etc. The police must not be allowed to use demonstrations as a padding for overtime.
A complete list of programs being cut is not available but link to the health department's cuts is available at http://www.sfgov.org/site/frame.asp?u=http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/

Bielenson Hearing Notice: Pursuant to the California Health & Safety Code Section 1442.5(a), the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will hold a Bielenson Hearing June 15, 2004, at 3:00 pm in the legislative chambers of City Hall to consider these proposed reductions in service.

Summary table (referred to as the 'attached list' in the Notice)

Those who are pissed off about this can say so during Public Comment tomorrow at the SF Board of Supervisors meeting sometime between 2:30 and 6 pm. Call your supervisor to get the exact time. Even if you can't make it call them to condemn the waste of money.

How many cops does it take to handle 40? 12 max in my opinion.

the police department gets an annual overtime alotment from the city, if they go over it..they are shit out of luck. the sfpd has been planning this for over 6 months. if you have a problem with it then you should've applied for chief of police. and if you people would stop protesting, they cops wouldn't have to work over time.

The downstown, Northeast sector of town and South of Market have been under siege from police (or perhaps they are federal, I cannot see the markings) helicopters every day, all day long, and into the early evening, buzzing overhead for several days. For the entire month of May, a police (or other Gestapo agency) have had a helicopter buzzing the Northeast sector of town on weekends. They cannot be fighting crime from the distance, while they waste tons of oil. This is a state of siege perpetrated by the police state. There is absolutely no reason for the SF police to have any helicopter. The only agency that can justify a helicopter in this area is the Coast Guard, and only over the sea, not over land.

Today, there were hundreds of police and California Highway Patrol on foot, motorcycles and in cars all over downtown San Francisco, around the Moscone Center, and at the freeway entrances. They also had Sheriff buses being driven around today and the police had SF Muni and other public transit agency buses parked at Pier 38, where the police sat around doing nothing. The SF police get $80,000 per year plus benefits to start. All this hardware costs millions of dollars.

When the SF Board of Supervisors (1 Green, one fascist "independent" and 9 Democrats) and that good Democrat "mayor" Gavin Newsom cry poor, you tell them to pay for all this garbage out of their own pocket, starting with multi-millionaire Newsom. You should further tell them that if this conference was known to be so controversial, as it obviously was since all this hoopla was clearly planned, they should have told the biotech conference to find another location outside of San Francisco for their show as we, the taxpayers of San Francisco, cannot afford it. The net effect is not a benefit to San Francisco, but a liability to our budget, which is already in trouble.

Please call all of the Board of Supervisors and tell them to never again invite this kind of conference or any other kind of conference they know to be controversial as we cannot afford this police state and do not want any police state. Please further tell them that we will not tolerate any cutbacks to pay for the police and sheriff sitting around with all their gear and driving round and round on or in their vehicles. They will have to get the money from the police and sheriff budget. They can put the routine raises of these parasites on hold to pay for all this garbage.

As to the protesters, they have a legal right to protest. It is called the First Amendment. The police and sheriff have all sworn to uphold the entire Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, which starts with the First Amendment.

We owe it to protesters for desegregation, women's rights to vote and choose, abolishing apartheid, bringing down the wall, and for human and civil rights here and abroad, disarmament, and to uphold our constitution and keep a corrupt government in check, so as you enjoy those things thank a protestor. Your kid's next bowl of cornflakes could contain rat and human genes, and the milk has already been contaminated with BGH.

The people attending this conference have every right to do so, unmolested by underemployed, luddite protesters. You have no right to disrupt, or even attemp to disrupt, a legal event just because YOU don't like what they are talking about. They are 18,000 people who have chosed to attend an event which IS NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS. It is idiocy like this that results in SF having to cut funding for other valuable services, having instead to spend it on cops to keep the pretensious assholes who populate these "protests" from looting and damaging property. YOU are the problem, not Biotech. I just fucking hate the egotistical, self important, I-know-it-all poseurs who constantly think they have the right to disrupt thousand of other people so they have a temper tantrum. The rest of us hate this shit, are tired of it, and frankly don't give a goddam if the cops bust your asses. At least you don't have to worry about Kamala giving you the death penalty for being an idiot.
