Six Israeli soccer fans charged with incitement for anti-Arab chants
Six soccer fans were charged with racist incitement on Monday in Jerusalem Magistrate's Court for chanting "Death to Arabs" at recent Betar Jerusalem games played at Teddy Stadium in the capital.
According to attorney Eli Abarbanel of the State Prosecutor's Office, only two soccer fans have faced similar charges in the past. But the state plans to step up enforcement in this area, he added.
"The first two defendants, whose cases are still in court, claimed that this phenomenon has been around for years and that the indictment unfairly singles them out. From now on, it will be impossible to make this argument," Abarbanel said.
The attorney continued: "Racist chants at the stadium cannot be considered free speech. This is ugly and bullying behavior, which hurts a wide population, especially in a mixed city. These calls constitute a type of call for bloodshed and this is unacceptable in a modern state."
