Israeli torture at Shatah prison. Israel continues attacks on Rafah

by Palestine Monitor
The Palestinian Political Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Association, “Hussam”, released a statement yesterday detailing the torture of Palestinian prisoners by their Israeli guards at Shatah prison.
According to Hussam, which is based in Gaza, Israeli guards had forced a large number of prisoners in the prison to strip naked and stand facing each other. Hussam claims that this has become a daily humiliation, under the pretext of searching for mobile phones or weapons that had been illegally smuggled into the prison.

The statement claims that Palestinians have repeatedly been beaten, kicked and abused at gunpoint by their guards. Hussam has called on the international community to intervene against the persistent human rights violations at the prison.

Two more Palestinians were killed in Rafah yesterday during another day of Israeli attacks on the city.

Father of nine, Mohammed Mahmoud Zarab (42), was killed by a live bullet to the chest fired by Israeli soldiers from the Tal Zorub military post towards civilian homes, in the western neighborhood of Zorub. Witnesses said Mohammed was trying to take his children home to shelter from the intensive shelling coming from the military posts and settlements surrounding Rafah.

21 year-old Imad Khalil Abu Aid was also shot dead by Israeli troops at the Sofah entrance to the east of the city. Imad was hit with several live bullets to chest. Witnesses refute Israeli claims that he was armed, declaring that he was an unarmed civilian who was merely walking near the entrance when he was shot and killed.

Several tanks, bulldozers and military jeeps invaded the village of Al Fakhari, east of Rafah. The area was heavily shelled and 150 dunums of land, containing fruit and olive trees, and water pipes, were destroyed. Streets and local infrastructure in the village were also targeted.
