Union Workers at SBC represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), have given notice to SBC of a possible STRIKE. We want to inform the people of California as to the critical issues that may lead to a shut down of operations at SBC.
When SBC came to Caif ornia, purchasing Pacific Bell, they promised a number of things to the people of California.
SBC Promised:
• To be satisfied, as a Regulated Utility, with a 10% Profit.
• To make the necessary investments in maintaining & upgrading the Telephone Network in California.
• To maintain Job Security & to improve working conditions for the workers that created, constructed and maintain the Telephone Network in California.
SBC has broken all of these promises.

Profits Soar, Health Core Attacked

While our labor generated $8.5 Billion dollars profit for SBC last year alone, SBC is seeking to shift hundreds of millions in Health Care payments onto the back of the workers and the retiree.
SBC has said it "cannot remain competitive" without attacking our Health Care Benefits. Yet SBC has posted the highest profit margins in the industry - while purchasing the competition, such as AT&T wireless, the largest recorded cash purchase in history!

Network Deteriorates

SBC has refused to make the neccessary investments in the Telephone Network. This has resulted in worse telephone service for many customers.
Poles can be seen dangling from phone lines for years at a time, with rats nests of wiring becoming commonplace throughout the network. And all this occurs while reducing the workforce in a mad scramble for higher profits!

SBC Exporting Our Jobs

SBC has now informed us that they exported 7,000 of our jobs to India, Mexico. Costa Rica <& the Philippines for cheap labor. That's 7% of the entire SBC workforce! Relocating our jobs to these other countries makes the commute simply impossible!
SBC seems to think that they should be able to make Billions of dollars from the people of the United States while at the same time shipping our jobs to other countries.
The workers at SBC are taking a stand for Jobs and Health Care.
