Modesto Group Brings Cascadia Media Collective to The Central Valley
By Mike Rhodes
Direct Action Anti-Authoritarians in Modesto hosted the Cascadia Media Collective (from Eugene Oregon) in their community earlier this month. An inspirational video was shown featuring scenes from the front lines of struggle against free trade, environmental exploitation and colonization. Film from demonstrations at the Free Trade Area of the Americas(FTAA) in Quebec and Miami, actions against the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Cancun and much more (including Sacramento) was shown. The emphasis was on how you can become the media - how “guerrilla media” can be a vital component of today’s resistance movements.
Following the presentation by the Cascadia Media Collective was a panel discussing the Central Valley Indymedia project, low power FM radio, Cable Access and other ways of breaking through the corporations near total control of information in this area. Speaking on the panel was Roy Wasden from Modesto, Nicholas DeGraff and Mike Rhodes (both from Fresno). Much of the discussion was about the media’s coverage of homeless issues and how we can use independent media to tell the community what is really going on. Everyone was encouraged to BE THE MEDIA.
