Ethnic Cleansing: Israel Rounds Up All Male Palestinians 16 Years Or Older In Rafah
In an alarming new development, the Israeli armed forces have ordered all males 16 or older in the Rafah neighborhood of Tel Sultan to gather in the local UNWRA Al Amariya school. The procedure is reminiscent of similar Israeli operations undertaken in the past in the West Bank whereby house to house searches of Palestinian neighbourhoods, round ups on the street and public announcements by the army for Palestinian males in a specified age range to come out of their houses and gather in a nearby school or facility have led on countless occasions to mass arrests and detention of Palestinians.
In addition to concerns over the welfare of those being detained, the motives of the Israeli forces is even more worrying. In April 2003 the Israeli military carried out a similar mass round-up of Palestinian males from the Tulkarem refugee camp in the West Bank. The soldiers used loud hailers to order all palestinian males to the cortyard of the UNRWA girls school. Those who refused were detained during house to house seraches of the camp. The army initially held the detainees at the school for three days but then expelled them ordering them not to return to their homes. At the time these expulsions rekindled widespread fears that detainees would suffer the same fate as Palestinian refugees from 1948 and 1967 who have never been allowed to return to their homes. In Rafah where these detainees are already refugees, such mass detention and possible expulsions moreover highlight the Israeli campaign of ethnic cleansing.
The situation in Rafah now is critical. Having been ordered to leave their homes there are reports that many were shot upon entering the streets and that four young Palestinians were shot when they reached the school. The people are terrified, if they leave their homes they may be shot dead in the street. If they make it to the school they do not know what awaits them but have heard others are being killed there. Those that stay in their homes are also in danger of being shot as the army carries out its house to house searches.
The army has also reportedly arrested 20 – 30 young people and placed them in a narrow street of the Tel al – Sultan neighbourhood where they are being tortured with bulldozers and tanks erratically driving at them.
As estimates of the Palestinian death toll climb to 33 dead, 1,000 people marched out of Rafah to Tel al - Sultan demonstrating against the Israeli assault. The army not only fired upon the demonstrators from guns in watch towers, an Apache helicopter fired two missiles into the crowd. Eight people were killed and at least 30 people have been seriously hurt.
Palestinian health and human rights organizations have pleaded with the international community to garner world wide support to intervene and stop this mass murder of Palestinians.
