Living in Iraq between 2001-2003, he watched as U.S. forces took control of the city and witnessed the country fall apart in the aftermath. During his final months in Baghdad, he helped a group of Iraqi university students in find their voice and start an independent newspaper - http://www.almuajaha.com.
