New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, son of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, today asserted that there would be a "very very strong backlash" against the 'divisive ideology' of the BJP and the RSS.
"India is not a divisive place. You will see what will happen, there will be a backlash towards this ideology and it will be a very very strong backlash." he said in an interview to the BBC World's Asia Today programme. Asked if he would come along and wave a magic wand at this time when the fortunes of the Congress were just going down so rapidly, he said Rahul Gandhi or the Gandhi family was not going to do anything for the Congress. What the Congress stood for in Indian Politics and had always stood for was the unifying factor.

Intrestingly the far right RSS is claiming the BJP lost because they were not racist enough:

BJP's "dilution" of Hindutva agenda caused it drubbing: RSS

New Delhi, May 13. (PTI): The RSS today blamed the BJP's "dilution" of Hindutva agenda for its drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls and said the core ideology should take centre stage for the party to stage a comeback.
"Our core voters and cadre were disinterested as they felt the BJP had diluted its (Hindutva) ideology. Politics is about perception and this perception cost the BJP," RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav, told reporters here.
The BJP, he said, fought the election on the agenda of good governance and development and whatever seats it got were due to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee factor.
"The BJP reached the 200 mark due to Vajpayee and could have got the numbers to form the Government if the other important factor of ideology was there," he said.
The RSS also blamed internal factors like infighting and wrong alliances for the defeat.
"We have to sit and analyse what went wrong," he said, adding lack of the party's principled ideology in the party campaign made local issues important which cost the BJP dear.
Describing the Lok Sabha results as surprising and not encouraging, he said for the RSS the Hindutva agenda was important and "our effort will be to bring ideology back to the centrestage."
"We tried to give full support to the BJP in the last five years. We tried (through our conduct) that allies don't create problem. Whatever they (BJP) want we will give them but ideology should be at the core for moving ahead," he said.

Arundhati Roy on Gujarat, the BJP and th RSS:
...
While the parallels between contemporary India and prewar Germany are chilling, they're not surprising. (The founders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [RSS], the National Volunteer Force that is the moral and cultural guild of the BJP, have in their writings been frank in their admiration for Hitler and his methods.) One difference is that here in India we don't have a Hitler. We have instead the hydra-headed, many-armed Sangh Parivar -- the "joint family" of Hindu political and cultural organizations, with the BJP, the RSS, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal each playing a different instrument. Its utter genius lies in its apparent ability to be all things to all people at all times.

The Sangh Parivar speaks in as many tongues. It can say several contradictory things simultaneously. While one of its heads (the VHP) exhorts millions of its cadres to prepare for the Final Solution, its titular head (the prime minister) assures the nation that all citizens, regardless of their religion, will be treated equally. It can ban books and films and burn paintings for "insulting Indian culture." Simultaneously, it can mortgage the equivalent of 60 percent of the entire country's rural development budget as profit to Enron. But underneath all the clamor and the noise, a single heart beats. And an unforgiving mind with saffron-saturated tunnel vision works overtime.

Whipping up communal hatred is part of the mandate of the Sangh Parivar. It has been planned for years. Hundreds of RSS shakhas across the country (shakha literally means "branch," and RSS shakhas are "educational" cells) have been indoctrinating thousands of children and young people, stunting their minds with religious hatred and falsified history, including unfactual or wildly exaggerated accounts of the rape and pillaging of Hindu women and Hindu temples by Muslim rulers in the precolonial period. In states like Gujarat, the police, the administration and the political cadres at every level have been systematically penetrated. It has huge popular appeal, which it would be foolish to underestimate or misunderstand. The whole enterprise has a formidable religious, ideological, political and administrative underpinning. This kind of power, this kind of reach, can only be achieved with state backing.
