Telephone Workers March for Justice @ SBC - pics from the march and rally
The message went out that CWA "Will Strike If Provoked."
Hundreds of CWA members and supporters marched through downtown Oakland, spreading their message. They handed out informational fliers, chanted slogans, and made many new friends. The energy was very high, and people are pumped up and ready to strike if necessary.
The update from the bargaining tables was that "things don't look good," and that SBC isn't taking the workers seriously. The president of Local 9415 advised workers to take their personal belongings home with them tomorrow, just in case a strike is declared over the weekend.
These workers made SBC $8.5 billion dollars in profits in 2003 alone. In spite of these massive profits, SBC is attacking workers healthcare as well as shipping thousands of jobs out of the country, never to return.
Last week, over 90% of the SBC Workers (CWA) voted to authorize a strike if it is becomes necessary. 100,000 telephone workers over 13 states are preparing the shut-down, and could strike as soon as May 8th.
