Independent Truckers Strike! Part 2
Independent truck drivers continue their strike into the third day.
The strike being staged by independent owner/operators shows no signs of slowing down as it heads into its third day in the East Bay.
One local transportation and warehousing business reports that "trucks are moving" in the Tacoma and L.A./Long Beach areas. Is the Oakland strike a desperate last hold-out to a West Coast wide strike that started on 4/30? With 10 times as many truckers operating in Southern California as there are in Northern California one must wonder how long this strike can last without the support of their colleagues in the rest of the state. However there are some independent operators in the South that are showing their solidarity with East Bay strikers, though those numbers are small.
Reports along the port note that at least one Oakland terminal opened at 3 am this morning so its rigs could avoid picket lines. The ploy worked as their were no protestors at the terminals at this early hour.
At least four strikers were arrested yesterday for a variety of assault and vandalism charges as picketers have been heckling truckers those few truckers who are crossing the lines. Pictures below show trucks receiving police escorts coming in and out of terminals.
The Oakland Teamsters Port Division made their presence felt this morning as they passed out literature and generally encouraged the striking truck drivers. The International Longshoremen and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is decidedly absent.
A heavy police presence has accompanied the strikers at all three major points of protest along the port, with one spot in particular receiving multiple patrols and even a small array of motorcycle police.
The national media has for the most part been mute on this strike. Here are two articles from papers in the area: http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1726~2126282,00.html, http://www.trivalleyherald.com/Stories/0,1413,86~10669~2126274,00.html.
Literature passed out to strikers and supporters include officials statements of support from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (Port Division) as well as petitions to sign up for the Intermodal Trucker Union.
Demands of the independent truckers include a basic rate increase of 30%, increases in fuel surcharge percentages, and miscellaneous other price/wage increases.
One owner of a company that relies heavily on the truckers to maintain their business summed up the sentiment of all local persons feeling the crunch of the strike when he said, "We are fucked."

Is there any call for a community support demonstration?
'cause i'm down if you are
When & where?
as i am not a resident of oakland, i feel someone who is should organize the action to make it community-based and locally relevant. i'll definitely lend my support and possibly my body as well (if i can make it/afford it), but someone else should set the time and place. will there be pickets tomorrow at the docks? if so, why not then? does anyone have info on this? let's get movin'
Don't wait for someone to organize. The strikers are there around the clock and greatly need our support. There are many who have been there since Friday and haven't left. Others live close by and take turns going home to rest. For those who don't leave, food and blankets are greatly needed. People outside of strikers are greatly needed to stand with them. There is a recycling issue that needs addressing. Many plastic water bottles and soda cans are piling up. The city is not empting the porta-potties regularly. Mostly the men need folks to go down there day or night to lend support to the picket line. Supporters can also make phone calls and urge others to get involved and help. All of us feel the pinch of high gas prices at the pump as well as in higher prices of everything trucks transport. Heres the kicker, they (truckers) are legally bound from running bio in there trucks (something they want to do) and are stoped regularly for inspections. Having a bad air day? Its not the truckers fault!
The West Oakland BART station is where we always met for the April 7th port protests. Is there any particular time tomorrow that would work best?
sounds like support crews are definitely needed to take care of some of the issues like recycling that are arising, plus other needs the strikers may have. someone post a call out (separate article from this one) on this site soon, plus start e-mailing. let's get people down there to help out the truckers.
As oil companies report record profits, trucking companies forced to buy California fuel are on strike. As of 4/27/04, California truckers were paying an average of $2.27/gallon for diesel fuel—56 cents/gallon higher than the national average and 22 cents/gallon higher than their competitors in Arizona. California Trucking Association is seeking an executive order from Governor Schwarzenegger to do the following:
1. Create competition in California’s diesel fuel market
2. Allow federal EPA approved diesel fuel to be sold in California.
3. Request the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute the worst market manipulation since the energy crisis.
4. Prohibit plans underway at the Energy Commission to ration diesel fuel for California fuel users.
5. Investigate the actions of international companies who set (store door) delivered rates at a cost below California fuel prices or refuse fuel surcharges.
6. Repeal the recent action of CARB moving ahead in 2006 with a new oil cartel sanctioned standard based on the theory that the fuel can be cleaner than the new federal standard.
Truckers who transport interstate commerce are required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which requires drivers to carry more intensive insurance and submit to more stringent inspections. They must mark their vehicle on both sides with the legal name under which they operate, and the identification number issued by the FMCSA preceded by the letters US Dot. To break the strike and demoralize strikers, companies who are not properly certified are hauling trailers from Union Pacific property at the Oakland docks by taping other companies’ logos over the information posted on the side of their trucks.

the gas is redicously priced high and with out the trucks out there we wont have nothing on the shelfs i think this strike is a really good idea.
