Description of Event:
Bread & Roses hosts a rare screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary "Festival!" as a benefit for the organization's program of live entertainment for isolated audiences in Bay Area institutions.
Filmed by Murray Lerner over four Newport Folk Festivals from 1963 to 1966, "Festival!" captures the richness of the American folk scene at that time like no other document.
The film will be followed by a Q & A session with director Murray Lerner and Joan Baez, hosted by Paul Liberatore of the Marin Independent Journal.
Description of Bread & Roses, the non-profit benefiting for the event
Founded in 1974 by Mimi Fariña, Bread & Roses provides free, live, quality entertainment to people who live in institutions or are otherwise isolated from society. We produce performances in convalescent homes, AIDS facilities, drug and alcohol facilities, special needs schools, centers for the developmentally disabled, detention facilities, and homeless shelters.
During the past fiscal year alone, we produced 530 shows for 23,000 audience members, in 105 facilities, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We accomplished this work with a staff of nine and a dedicated cadre of over 1,200 volunteers. Bread & Roses charges no fees for its services. We rely on individual donations and foundation/corporation grants to accomplish our mission.
