Sea Turtle Protest At Sacramento Safeway!

by Dan Bacher
The Sea Turtles are coming to Sacramento! I encourage everybody to participate in this lunch time protest to protest Safeway Stores' selling of swordfish and failure to post mercury warnings. Sacramento activists - let's give the Sea Turtle Restoration Project a big and spirited welcome!
(From Andy Peri of the Sea Turtle Restoration Project)

Please join the Sea Turtle Restoration Project in a lunch-time direct action to protest Safeway stores' selling of swordfish and their failure to post mercury warning signs in stores where mercury-contaminated fish is sold.  Safeway continues to knowingly poison their customers and their customers' children and we are demanding that is stop.

The action will take place:

Where: Safeway Store- 1025 Alhambra Blvd. (at J Street) in Sacramento
When: Wednesday, May 12th from 12:00 Noon until 1:30 PM

We will have protest signs, sea turtle costumes, leaflets and chants; all you need is to show up in a spirit of solidarity with endangered sea turtles and public health proponents!  Bring a friend if you can, too!

Background-

Safeway is being targeted by this campaign for its failure to post warning signs in all store sections where mercury-contaminated fish is sold, despite the fact that they are being sued by the State of California for failing to do so.  Also, Safeway refuses to post warning signs in stores outside California, putting thousands of their customers' children at risk from mercury poisoning.

We are demanding that Safeway:
Stop selling mercury-contaminated swordfish
Post warning in all store sections where mercury-contaminated fish is sold
Post warning sign in all Safeway stores- not just in California

Additionally, swordfish and tuna, two of the species that are highest in mercury are caught using longline fishing methods which maim and kill thousands of sea turtles every year.  By joining us you will be helping to reduce consumer demand for these species, thereby helping to protect the highly endangered Pacific leatherback seaturtle from extinction.  You will also be helping to educate the public about the health threat that mercury in our food supply poses.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can cause severe neurological defects in developing fetuses and children.  There is a growing body of data that shows that low levels of mercury can be significantly harmful to adults as well.
