On Sunday, May 16, 2004 The Women’s Building will celebrate the 10th Birthday of its magnificent mural, MaestraPeace, with a community street fair. The Birthday party is part of a year-long celebration of the Women’s Building’s 25th Anniversary.

The acclaimed mural was painted on The Women’s Building façade in 1994 by seven multi-generational, multi-cultural women muralists with input from a broad range of community organizations and individuals. Its vibrant color and complex form embodies a belief in the healing power of women’s wisdom for all communities and serves as a visual testament to the courageous contributions of women through time and around the world.

Over the past decade, the mural has gained international recognition. It has become closely identified with The Women’s Building and its commitment to women’s empowerment, art and social justice. In the past couple of years, the mural has been vandalized several times in a series of hate crimes, but despite the efforts to deface it, MaestraPeace has emerged more beautiful than ever, reflecting the determined spirit of resistance of the community which it represents.

The May 16th celebration will honor the resilience of the Mission community, the inspirational vision of the muralists, and the survival and growth of the Women’s Building for a quarter century. It will feature music, dance, food, local artist booths, and community tables.
