Pictures from Idriss Stelley Memorial at the Metreon - 4/24/04

by upton sinclair
Mesha Monge-Irizarry requested permission from the Metreon to build a memorial altar for her son inside as part of the Metreon's April 24, 2004 Earth Day exhibition, but she never received a response. So people decided to create the memorial outside of the Metreon.

"Care for the earth means also caring for our communities," Monge-Irizarry said. "The racism behind the shooting of my son is also responsible for the environmental assaults on our health and well being in Bayview Hunters Point. Earth healing must begin with justice."

Folks from Reclaim the Commons were at the memorial adding their own touch of life, and seeking to bridge the consciousness gap between what happens in Idriss' neighborhood environmentally(Hunter's Point)with what happened to Idriss at the Metreon.

It was pretty weird inside the Metreon. There were all these tables that more mainstream environmental groups were allowed to set up inside and random advertisements for various corporations everywhere. The memorial to Idriss was a lot better outside afterall, since it seemed like the Metreon's Earth Day event was so disconnected from what Earth Day is really about. At least the Memorial was outside, had trees and other plants around it, and was seeking to draw a connection to what happens environmentally in urban environments like Hunter's Point.
