THURS AM Speak Out Against Police Abuse of 3/20 Anti-War Protestors SF Supervisors Hearing

by Protesting is not a Crime
The hearing will be in City Services Room 263. Between Van Ness and Polk, Grove and McAllister. The meeting begins at 9:30am. However, the item is #6 on the agenda with a special order at 10am. It is hard to see how this could happen any sooner than 11am.

There is an overhead projector which will allow you to show any photos, drawings or documents to the audience. There is a vhs projector which can use for video footage. There is also the capability of using a labtop computer presentation (the drawback with the labtop connection is there is no sound) These will not be extensive presentations; remember you will have 2-3 minutes to present your comments.

If one has the time and inclination, it would be worthwhile to review the lengthy discussion with then Chief Fagan about demonstrations which took place after the 3/20/03 demonstrations opposing the impending war. At that time there was a detailed discussion at a Board Meeting in which supervisors spelled out how they wanted the police to facilitate (direct traffic) demonstrations as long as protestors were marching; not approving boxing in demostrators to end their demonstration arbitrarily and when the police wanted to. This point needs to be revisited and preparatory work will help institutionalize this policy.

Sponsoring legislator is Supervisor Matt Gonzalez (415) 554-7630
