MUNI cuts postponed/cancelled
Proposed MUNI cuts postponed, cancelled
At the April 20 public hearing, the MTA Board of Directors was unable to vote on proposed "service adjustments" and dropped plans for some cuts entirely.
The Board acknowledged that due to overwhelming public outcry (several overflowing meetings and over 600 letters and e-mails, not counting petitions), the 3 Jackson, 5 Owl, and 12 lines will remain unchanged. Also, the 7 Haight will run peak period service. The announcement was met with cheering. At least 1 person yelled "Fuck Yeah." I'm not saying if it was me.
The Board was unable to vote on other proposed cuts and schedule changes, because they backed themselves into a corner by not declaring an official fiscal emergency, because without the official declaration of financial crisis, they can't cut shit. The measure was denied by 3-3 vote. I don't think that several of the Board members who voted against declaring the emergency knew what they were doing, and the impression they gave to the public was that they hadn't done nearly enough homework on this issue.
Support Sup. McGoldrick's proposed Transit Impact Development Fee,which would channel funds from new developments into MUNI expansion if you believe in public transit instead of snarled traffic congestion and harass MUNI if they propose to cut more lines, because it's obvious now that they're listening.
