Phone Biltz for Golden Gate Park

by Jym Dyer (jym [at] econet.org)
*** CALL TODAY! ***

=v= As the lawsuits to stop the underground garage in Golden Gate Park await their hearing dates, destruction has already begun. The Music Concourse Community Partnership promised, however, that they would not do any irreversible damage before the hearings.

They did not keep this promise. They cut down numerous mature cherry trees, which cannot be replaced anytime soon. These cherry trees are such a signature species of Golden Gate Park that one is featured on the cover of the definitive book:

The Trees of Golden Gate Park and San Francisco

We are concerned that the pedestrian tunnels are next on the list. They were built to a standard of craftsworkship that doesn't exist today, from stones quarried in San Francisco. They are historic and irreplaceable.

This webpage has photos of the tunnels as they are, and also the type of charmless painted concrete block tunnel that they would mostly likely be replaced with:

http://www.indybay.org/news/2004/04/1677405.php

=v= We don't want any more irreplaceable damage done before the court dates. We want them to keep their promise. You can help:

Call the Mayor's office TODAY (phone number below) and tell him you don't want the pedestrian tunnels or mature trees destroyed, or any other damage done that can't be undone, before this is resolved in the courts. Call your City Supervisor TODAY (phone numbers below) with the same message. (If you're not sure who your Supervisor is, go to http://www.sfgov.org/ and enter your address in the "My Neighborhood" field.)

It'll just take a few minutes. It's a phone blitz. Call today, so they know we're paying attention. Call today, it's fun and easy. Call today, I'm starting to sound like a radio announcer. Call today, and tomorrow we can enjoy our park's beautiful and historic treasures.

ah come on. we all know that a little direct action would go a long way in saving the tunnels and the trees. you can either do a treesit in some of the trees, lock down to construction equipment, or somehow take over the tunnels via lockdown or sit in.

regardless of what you do...whining about how things are getting destroyed and calling for petitions and phones calls doesn't seem like it will do much. try organizing a direct action of your own for the park. leading critical mass to the site was a good first step, even though it pissed off a lot of people on the ride cause we didn't want to be there just for a meeting. but if you can build some sort of demonstration or direct action, your two wheeled friends would be likely to come back to the parks aid.

don't mourn, organize!! - joe hill

This happened 8 years ago. We lost. Surprise surprise. The houses got built by one of O'Donoghue's scrumbag Irish developers.

Only way to stop these things from happening once and for all is to get rid of the fascist mayor and the fascist supervisors.

Still, it doesn't hurt to try. Today's Chron "reports" that MallWart has given up on S.F. because of "community sentiment". Even scumbag Dufty has come out against them.

Fight on.
by just wondering
What are you implying here, that it would have been better if the developer were Chinese or Russian? Is that what you're saying?

If not, why the race baiting?

Yeah you could really leave out the "Irish Scumbag" part of yr comments. I have met Joe in the past and the only thing he really has going for himself is that he is Irish. He actually supported efforts to free Roisin McAlliskey, the daughter of Bernadette Devlin, when she was in prison for some alleged IRA activity in 97-98.

So yes, Joe O'Donoghue is scum, but it doesn't really have so much to do with his being Irish. Though the Irish in SF do have a history of turning on fellow immigrants, such as the Chinese back in the day, and many Irish still don't see the connections. On the flip side, there was the San Patricio Brigade of Irish defectors from the US side of the US-Mexico war, and there are still plenty of Irish fighting in this noble tradition.

Next time you see Joe or his fellow scum, that have forgotten most of their Irish history, tell them Pog Mo Thoin(pronounced like pogue mahone)...it means kiss my ass in Irish.
