Hamas chief killed in air strike

by bbc
The head of the militant Islamic movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Abdul Aziz Rantissi, has been killed in an attack on his vehicle.
Mr Rantissi was driving his car in a Gaza suburb as an Israeli helicopter fired missiles at it, witnesses say.

At least two other people were also killed and several more injured.

The attack came hours after a suicide bomber killed himself and an Israeli soldier at the Erez checkpoint just north of the city.

The BBC's Peter Greste, in Gaza City, says people are speculating that the attack was in response to the suicide bombing.

The militant Hamas leader was one of Israel's top targets after it assassinated Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an air strike last month.

'Israeli crime'

Crowds of Hamas supporters gathered outside Gaza City's Shifa hospital, vowing revenge after the killings.

Senior Hamas figure Ismail Haniya vowed that Mr Rantissi's blood "will not flow in vain".

The Palestinian Authority condemned the killing of Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, accusing Israeli of "state terror".

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this Israeli crime and state terror," he said.

"It is evident now to the world that the Palestinian people need international protection more than ever," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

The Israeli army made no immediate comment on the helicopter strike.

Mr Rantissi was one of the most forceful spokesmen against compromise with Israel.

He described himself as one of seven founders of Hamas and was considered second in importance only to Sheikh Yassin

Khaled Meshaal - Hamas' politburo chief in exile - was declared the group's overall leader after Yassin was killed.

The chief of the organization claiming to have bombed the Israelis is blown up by the Israelis a couple hours later.

That is NOT intended as an excuse for either of these peoples not managing to find a peaceful solution to their conflict.

But it is intended to indicate what is going on.
by Who are the Victims?
Is it really self defense for the Israel or is it the Palestinian defending themselves from the crimes of Land Confiscation, Home Demolitions and other atrocities committed by the Israeli Government/Military?

Who is the real Victim in this struggle for Palestinian Freedom that began in Sept. 2000?
Who has died and how?

Even in war zones assasination of leaders is usually considered something that is against international law. Extrajudicial executions seem even worse. Should international drug lords be assasinated without trial? They cause a lot of deaths too? What about heads of multinational who sacrifice their employees to make a buck?
Israel didnt kill a Hamas leader in a shoot out. Last month they could have arrested Yassin but they chose to kill him with a rocket attack instead. Why? To show Palestinians that their withdraw from Gaza wasnt them caving in? If the goal was to strike terror into the hearts of militant Palestinians it fits an exact definition of terrorism. Israel may assume they have nothing to lose since most of the world's opinion of the Occupation cant get any worse, but as the US defends Israeli torture of prisoners to get confessions, home demolitions as punishments of relatives of criminals, the use of bullets against kids throwing rocks and in the last few years the extrajudicial killing of political leaders who were by no means in hiding, one can only expect this type of behavior to spread.

On the news today I heard conservative Republicans who would usually applaud an Israeli assasination of a Hamas leader, denounce Sharon for making it even harder for the US to win "hearts and minds" in Iraq. The Bush administration will soon have to chose between making "friends" with Hamas and Hezbollah or losing Iraq. The most likely outcome will be the administration trying to appear to not be quite so proIsrael AND lose Iraqi public opinion by not going far enough. The Iraqi public may not stand for any occupier but they sure as hell wont stand for an occupier that is so deadset against groups that are so popular in Iraq (partly as a backlash against Saddam's secularism).

There was an interview on a television show where a Female Iraqi School Teacher was being interviewed. One of the reasons she believes that the Iraqi Sunnis and Shiites may be united in their fight against the U.S. occupation is that one of their greatest fears is that they will be under the kind of brutal occupation that the Palestinian are in right now.

I did not see this program in the U.S.
Did anyone in the U.S. see this program? If so please comment.

So if the U.S. wants to get anywhere in Iraq they need to free the Palestinian People and see to it that they have their small State on the whole of the West Bank and Gaza.
It is about one year since work started on the ROAD MAP that was suppose to finally free the Palestinian People from the Israeli Occupation and Oppression, and what we see instead is a wall/fence/barrier going up that is taking more of their small amount of land instead of working on getting the Palestinian State so we can start on the real road to peace.

Palestine must be free, from the river to the sea.

I find it interesting that you seem, much of the time, to look at things from a perspective of what would benefit the US. In so doing, you're not only relegating the will of both Israelis and "Palestinians" to the sideways, but also reinforcing the impression among many Arabs and others worldwide that Americans only care about what benefits them and to heck with the interests of the sides of the actual conflicts. I think you should ponder this point.

P.S.: the post following yours is by nessie ("Free Palestine"), the foremost troll here. He means "Palestine" (neglecting the fact that Jordan comprises some 80% of "Palestine") should be freed of Israeli/Zionist rule. Yet he would never call for freeing "Palestine" from Arab "Palestinian" rule. Poor racist.

well that kind of goes with the job, if you don't like the wrisk then don't become a leader of a world recognized terrorist group.... kind of simple!

>>>to look at things from a perspective of what would benefit the US<<<

Not so much benefit the U.S. but they are in a way responsible for giving billions to Israel therefore allowing Israel to have superior Military weapons where by they can drop bombs on the Palestinian People from the safety of Apache helicopter cockpits. And the Palestinian People are denied weapons to help them fight for their land and freedom.

What is happening right now is not working.
You have to start somewhere.

Just like it would be outrages to try and ethnic cleanse some 5,000,000 Jews from the area.
It would also be an outrage to try and ethnic cleanse some 4,000,000 Palestinians from the area.

So let Israel have its Country in its pre 1967 Borders and let the Palestinians have their Country in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza.

If you were to say that it would be wrong, to say to the Jews that even though they were born and have lived in Israel all their lives they had to move to the U.S. and Europe because there are Jews living in the U.S. and Europe.

It would be just as wrong to say to the Palestinian who were born and have lived all their lives in the West Bank and Gaza they had to move to Jordan just because some Palestinians happen to live in Jordan.

Uhh...even if the US didn't provide Israel with billions in military aid, Israel would have been and is able to have weaponry superior to what the Palestinians could have. You should study the facts about Israel's arm producing capabilities.
