Oakland Action at Coke Regional Headquarters on March 23

by upton sinclair (irlandeso [at] riseup.net)
“If we lose the fight against Coca-Cola, we will first lose our union, next our jobs and then our lives.” Juan Carlos Galvis, VP of local union in Colombia.

On February 25th, the Colombian Ministry of Labor authorized Coca-Cola to dismiss 91 workers – 70% of whom are union leaders. This is Coca-Cola’s effort to essentially eliminate the union. On March 15th, workers at 7 bottling plants began a hunger strike.

Hunger Striking Workers are demanding that instead of being fired, those workers be relocated to other bottling plants in accordance to Articles 18 and 91 of their current collective bargaining agreement.

Since 1990 eight Coke workers have been killed and 67 have received death threats from paramilitaries. Management has used this to intimidate workers out of being part of the union.

§Getting Ready for Protest

Looks like it's the right place. Let's try some chants...
§Coca Cola Regional Headquarters in Oakland

killercoke4hqaddress.jpg
Just off the 880 freeway, near the Hegenburger/Airport Exit. Take note of the address for future protests. Unfortunately the Killer Coke sign will not be there, but feel free to go add your own artwork to the building at your leisure.
§Picketing starts

killercoke2picketingstarts.jpg
Folks begin to move in closer to the front door of the building with bullhorn in hand, and more people start to show up.
§Workers Killed by Coke in Colombia

These are tombstones representing some of the union workers that have been killed in Colombia in recent years. These folks were also working for Coca Cola bottling plants and distributors.
§Coke calls Oakland Police

Police officers tell us that we have to take down all the art work on the Coke property, stop using the bullhorn, and stop picketing in front of the door.
§More Picketing...

§More Picketing...

killercoke7picketing.jpg
People picketed without the use of the bullhorn for a decent amount of time, while the Oakland police were talking to Coca Cola representatives about whether they would be willing to accept a letter from the group protesting or not. Coca Cola reps. didn't want to talk to us, so we ended up leaving the letter at the door, and then going out away from the building with our banners and signs.
§Killer Coke Billboard
by upton sinclair (irlandeso [at] riseup.net)
killercoke8billboardingthelegalway.jpg
At first we had this banner and another banner hanging from the fence so those who drive by could see what was going on. Coca Cola didn't like this so they called Cal Trans on us and got a crew to come down and rip our banners off the fence. The crew also told us that it would be perfectly legal to stand on the other side of the fence with our banner and hold it up ourselves for people to see as they drive-by. The Cal Trans crew also told us that we could call them if we want to report other billboards that we think that they should take down, though I don't think that anyone has followed up on their offer.
§Group Pic at the End of the Demonstration

Quite a few people had left or gone back in the building to go back to work already, but we decided that we should get a couple of group pics before we left.
§Another Group Pic

Then a little bit of cliche chanting, ie "we'll be back" and the like.
§UC Berkeley's Killer Coke Vending Machines
by upton sinclair (irlandeso [at] riseup.net)
ucberkeleyskillercokemachine.jpg
ie. the local - global connection for many of the people who were at the demonstration on March 23rd. The UC Berkeley - Coca Cola contract, which lasts over 10 years and gives the Associated Students of the University of California about $1 million per year for exclusive rights to the vending machines on campus. This deal also allows UC Berkeley students to exert some amount of pressure on Coca Cola via their campus' Trademark Licensee Policy, which was originally developed to protect workers' rights at factories that make clothing and similar products for the University of California system.
