Saturday, April 10, Noon, San Francisco
National Call for Emergency Local Protests in Response to Escalating Violence in Iraq
It's just as many in the peace movement feared: the presence of U.S. troops, the
mounting frustration by the war profiteering and the shambles of the
"reconstruction" effort, and the infighting among factions in Iraq jockeying for
power amidst disorder and chaos has come to a boiling point - a huge upsweep in
violence.
In roughly the past 72 hours, more than 35 U.S. soldiers have been killed, with well
over 300 Iraqis killed and 400 wounded. Needless, every one.
The Bush administration and the Pentagon are now using unprecedented violence
against the Iraqi people, including the bombing of a mosque that killed 40
worshippers. Super-lethal AC-130 gunships firing depleted uranium bullets have been
turned against the civilian population.
They are threatening to call in more troops to Iraq, asking our kids to risk their
lives in an increasing violent, chaotic war that we now know was unnecessary as it
was based on lies, misperception, and greed.
Yeah, you were just out in the streets on the 20th speaking out against the madness,
the profiteering, and the tragically needless death in Iraq. But, it's even more
important to respond loudly and resolutely to these new events. The Bush
administration has to hear the people aren't going to stand by and watch quietly.
So many lives and so many futures are at stake. What happens in Iraq has
implications for the entire globe.
You'll find CODEPINK at the UN Plaza in San Francisco at Noon on Saturday with our
signs and banners. So, throw on some pink and come join the thousands in the Bay
Area, New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., as well as people all over the
world who say: enough is enough.
