Madrones, MAXXAM and the Mattole

by moth
the Mattole watershed is recovering from years of clearcuts by MAXXAM/Pacific Lumber. This past week people gathered at Fox Camp Gate in the Mattole to rally and save old growth trees from Maxxam's continued assault on the ecosystem..
Madrones and Douglas firs make up the majority of old growth forest in the Mattole. Madrones are larger yet similar to manzanitas as both are in the heath family, give sweet berries and have smooth red bark. Madrone cider can be brewed from the berries..

Old growth madrones fall victim to the relentless corporate chainsaws of Maxxam/Pacific Lumber, the same timber corporation that clearcuts old growth redwoods..

Red tree voles feast on the needles of Doug firs, they nest only in old growth Doug firs. This endangered species is at risk of extinction if Maxxam/PL continues their unsafe timber harvesting..

The March to the Mattole converged with the Eureka Peace March on Sat the 20th. Peace activists and forest activists were able to reconnect and show our solidarity against the corporate militarism that has destroyed lives and ecosystems.

On Monday the 29th everyone gathered at Fox Camp Gate outside of Honeydew to celebrate the beauty of the Mattole and the culmination of the march from McKinleyville. We shared our collective vision as to how we could work together with the local community to return the Mattole to the local community and encourage corporate raiders Maxxxam to leave Humboldt. We recieved a great deal of local support, the people who live in the Mattole are not happy with the damage and deceit from Maxxam/PL..

other info;

We need to remind people that on the one year anniversary of the US bombing of Baghdad, Maxxam's extractions at Freshwater occurred almost simultaneously to the day. Climber and woman abuser Eric Schatz was hired by Maxxam to forcibly remove treesitters from the tops of old growth redwoods they were trying to save. Several females reported him sexually abusive and he also caused someone back injury from improper lowering technique..

One month after the bombing of Iraq, on April 17th an old growth redwood named Allah was cut after the treesitter was extracted. Coincidence or part of the neoconservative antagonism against Islam? These events will not be forgotten, we are aware of the Bush/Hurwitz divide and conquer neoconservative agenda..

We want an end to the US military occupation of Iraq and an end to Maxxam's occcupation of Humboldt!!
