Thousands of women in Argentina have taken up the
struggle for liberation by their own hand. Paso a las
luchadores focuses on seven women whose day-to-day
struggles against sexism takes in all aspects of life.
These Argentine women see that their oppression is
created by the capitalist social system and in
Argentina and is manifested by the lack of jobs, the
double burden of exploitation that working women face,
domestic and institutional violence, and in the lack
of freedom to govern one's own body. (Abortion remains
illegal in Argentina.)
This movie focuses on the solutions these Argentina
women in struggle have come to: the solution lies not
in individual remedies but in confronting the
repressive social system. They look to the creation of
an independent assembly of the working class as the
way forward for the fight for working woman's power.

Korean Labor Media Activist, Myoung Joon Kim
Tuesday April 6, 2004 6-9pm
Institute for Industrial Relations, UC Berkeley
2521 Channing Way; Berkeley, CA
Organized by Korea Solidarity Committee and LaborTech http://www.labortech2004.org
Co-sponsored by the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Education, UC Berkeley
Center for Korean Studies, the Institute for Food and Development Policy
(FoodFirst) and the Channing and Popai Liem Education Foundation
About "FRIEND OR FOE"
Produced by Labor News Production, Directed by Jiyoung Lee, 2003,
119min
Directed by award winning filmmaker, Jiyoung Lee, "Friend or Foe"
documents the bitter 517 day long struggle of contracted workers at KT
(Korean Telecommunication) against globalization. When KT announced its
downsizing plan in 2000, they immediately fired 7,000 contract workers.
Workers had already been forced to work under "non-regular" contracts at
lower pay, heightened job insecurity and limited legal protection and
they were no longer willing to be sacrificed for the good of the
economy. The targeted workers launched a new union and fought for a
year and a half to stop discriminatory dismissals. In the face of
police oppression and betrayal by regularly-employed workers, the union
eventually lost their struggle, but not before exposing the severe
situation imposed by globalization on workers compelled to accept
discriminatory non-regular status. "Friend or Foe" provides critical
analysis of the weaknesses of the current labor movement in South Korea
and renders key insights into how crisis-ridden unions in the current
global context can fight the assault on their basic rights and
livelihoods.
English/Korean interpretation will be provided.
Refreshments will also be provided.
