Bush, Frist, and Nickles Cut 1.1 Million Workers Off From Unemployment Extensions

by Todd Davis (neoxz34 [at] hotmail.com)
A short article about how Bush, Frist, and Nickles
have cut 1.1 million people off from unemployment
extensions.
Senate Majority Leader Frist, and Senator Nickles are two of the Senate Republican leaders that have been most responsible for cutting 1.1 million people off from their unemployment extensions. President Bush has said he would sign the unemployment extensions, but Bush has failed 1.1 million American workers by doing nothing, as 1.1 million people were slashed off of unemployment on March 31, 2004.

Senate Majority Leader Frist has been President Bush’s primary tool in cutting 1.1 million people off from their unemployment extensions, and has led Bush’s
war against the American worker every step of the way. It has been Senator Frist, and Senator Nickles that have directed a systematic conspiracy to deprive the American
worker of a few extra weeks of unemployment, so they can find jobs.

There were 58 votes in favor of the Cantwell Amendment to extend unemployment benefits, and Senator Cantwell’s second Amendment on March 31, was opposed
by Senator Frist, and Senator Nickles, so the Amendment never came up for a vote. According to Paul Monies: “David Blatt, director of public policy for the Community Action Project, said there is broad bipartisan support for another extension, with Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury Secretary John Snow backing the program in recent weeks. But he said legislation is being held up by congressional leaders.”

In a letter to Senator Frist on December 22, 2004, Senator Clinton wrote that: “The unemployment rate today is 5.9%; it was 5.7% in March 2002. There are 450,000 more unemployed individuals today than there were then. The number of jobs has fallen by 300,000 since TEUC was enacted, and the number of individuals out of work for more than six months has risen by more than 700,000, an increase of 53%. Furthermore, three out of four individuals receiving unemployment insurance benefits are exhausting their benefits without finding work. We should terminate the TEUC program only when the job outlook for the unemployed is significantly better than it was when we enacted the program.”

The main problem that has been holding up the approval of the unemployment extensions, and has led to 1.1 million eligible workers being cut off have been Republican leaders like Bush, Frist, and Nickles. According to Isaac Shapiro at
the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: “The Republican leadership in both the House and Senate have so far opposed resuming the program and continue to throw up legislative roadblocks. The Bush Administration has refused to take a public position on the issue. If the Congressional leadership were to change its position, or if the Administration were to come out in support of resuming the program, it is quite likely the program would be quickly restored. The mounting and unprecedented number of individuals exhausting their regular benefits and going without federal aid suggest this would be a desirable outcome. With the number of exhaustees already topping one million, and growing larger each day, the TEUC program should be resumed.”

The number of unemployed workers cut off unemployment by Bush, Frist, and Nickles, and other Republican leaders in the Senate has grown to 13,500 in Arizona, 176,700 in California, 41,900 in Florida, 103,300 in New York, 37,600 in North Carolina, 20,000 in Tennessee, 52,800 in Illinois, 48,500 in Michigan, and 72,000 in Texas. Many of these people who have exhausted their benefits have children
to feed, rent to pay, and health care expenses.

Even though the job market remains week, and Frederal Reserve Chairman Greenspan has endorsed unemployment extensions the Bush Administration, and Republican
leadership in the Senate has continued to declare war on the American worker. Hopefully, Bush, Frist, and Nickles can be held accountable at the ballot box for the human suffering, and economic pain that they have inflicted upon the workers of this country.

Senator Kerry, and Senator Dayton have joined Senator
Cantwell in opposition to Bush, Frist, and Nickles' opposition
to the extensions. Senator Frist has been instrumental
in cutting 1.1 million people off from their extensions.

Despite the fact that the March jobs report was positive the
unemployment rate still increased from 5.6 to 5.7 percent.
Moreover, it takes workers time to find jobs, so the extensions
are needed now--more than ever.

Children of the unemployed are going without food, and
evictions, and foreclosures are increasing because of Frist,
Bush, and Nickles.

Don't believe John Kerry when it comes to ANYTHING!

When the vote to extend TEUC came up in the senate at the end of February 2004, a "super majority" of 60 votes were needed for passage. The vote fell two votes short with only 58 in favor of the extension.

Guess which two democratic senators elected NOT to attend the vote? That's right... John Kerry & John Edwards!

Today (5/11/04) another vote was held on the issue of an extension for TEUC. However, the vote came up short again. This time <b>ONLY ONE ADDITIONAL VOTE WAS NEEDED FOR PASSAGE</b>!

Guess who didn't show up again to even cast a vote? That's right... John Kerry! [Even John Edwards was finally able to show up & cast a vote!!]

So, don't believe ANYTHING coming from the Kerry camp. They're a bunch of political amateurs seeking only to get Kerry elected to the White House.

Any idiot can see the importance of this issue. Yet <b>"JFK Heinz" has been AWOL for both votes</b>! Why?

But "JFK Heinz" isn't the only one to blame. Geroge W. Bush doesn't seem to think the TEUC extension is worthwhile, nor do either of the two major political parties. If the democrats <b>REALLY</b> wanted this measure to pass... they would make sure the "junior senator from Massachusetts" was at work, rather continually "absent without leave".

The Cantwell Amendment failed again on May 12, 2004, even though the amendment had 59 votes. The Amendment to extend unemployment benefits was on a corporate tax bill, which fell one vote short 59-40.

As a result, 1.1 million laid of workers will be left with nothing as Republican leaders in the Senate, such as Senator Frist, continue their war against the American worker. The
children of many of the unemployed are hungry, and malnourished. Many of the unemployed are either already homeless, or facing the prospect of evictions, or foreclosures because of Bush, and the US Senate.

Senator Kerry was once again not present for this critical vote for unemployment extensions, and was campaigning in Kentucky. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell also voted against the unemployment extensions, after having said he supposedly favored the extensions.

Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) vs. Gun Control The explanation provided by John Kerry and his cronies with respect to his absence in the U.S. Senate on May 11, 2004, is wholly inadequate and ridiculous beyond imagination. His stated theory suggests that the Republicans are against passage of TEUC, therefore there's absolutely nothing he can do to break the logjam. According to John Kerry one of the Republicans voting in favor of the measure would have simply changed his vote in order to nullify his vote. Boy... talk about "conspiracy theorists"... John Kerry is so paranoid about President Bush and the Republican controlled Congress that he is literally afraid to show up for work and do the job he was elected to perform! Here are the facts: May 11, 2004 Senate Rejects Extended Unemployment Benefits Kerry Absent as Measure Fails by Single Vote The Senate by a single vote rejected an election-year effort Tuesday to extend federal unemployment benefits. Democrats tried to attach the benefit to a corporate tax bill. On a 59-40 vote in the GOP-controlled Senate, they fell just shy of the 60 votes needed to overcome objections that extending the benefits violated last year’s budget agreement. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, was the only senator who missed the vote. He was campaigning in Kentucky. The amendment would have offered emergency federal unemployment benefits for six months, temporarily giving 13 weeks of extra assistance to people who exhaust their state benefits — typically 26 weeks. Campaigning in Florida, Kerry said he didn’t come back to Washington for the vote because he understood that Senate Republicans would not let the measure pass. “We were told that no matter what would happen they would change a vote in the Senate and they were not going to let it happen,” Kerry said in an interview in Jacksonville with television stations WIXX and WTLV. “They don’t want it to happen. It is very clear that even if they pass it in the Senate, they are not going to pass it in the House.” Campaign spokesman David Wade had said earlier in the day that Kerry “has fought again and again to extend unemployment benefits for workers left behind in the Bush economy. The reason we haven’t succeeded is because George Bush opposes extending unemployment insurance and so do his allies in the Republican House of Representatives and 39 Republican senators.” Steve Schmidt, a Bush-Cheney campaign spokesman, responded: “Last month, John Kerry was pushing for the extension of unemployment benefits. Today he had the chance to actually vote on that question, but was too busy playing politics when he would have made the difference in the Senate.” It's very clear from the data below that the measure failed to pass the senate on February 26, 2004 due to John Kerry & John Edwards being absent; and on May 11, 2004 due to John Kerry being the lone absentee senator. The EXACT same senators voted in favor of the measure in May as they did in February. The ONLY exception was that John Edwards finally graced the senate with his presence! John Kerry's "mystery senator changing his/her vote to stymie his efforts" theory just doesn't hold water. (It's absolute nonsense!) Contrast all this with John Kerry's efforts on "Super Tuesday" (March 2, 2004). Both John Kerry & John Edwards "rushed" back to Washington, D.C. to vote on supposedly "important legislation". What was the legislation? Gun Control By a vote of 52 to 47 (1 not voting) both Jogn Kerry and John Edwards helped pass Senate Amendment 2637 to provide for a 10-year extension of the assault weapons ban. However, this amendment was attached to senate bill 1805, which was soundly defeated later that same day by a vote of 90 to 8 (2 not voting - one of which was John Edwards).
