Lake Merritt Locals Fight Planned McDonalds

by Paul (dununliberation [at] hotmail.com)
Lake Merritt Community Coalition Fights to keep a MacDonalds restaurant from being built across the street from the farmers market.
Hey,
Peep this: They want to put a Mc Donalds restarurant at 500 Lake Park Ave. This is directly across the street from the Lake Merritt farmers market that is held on Saturday mornings. Currently there is a Kwik Way drive in there. Its between Bank of America and the Serenander bar.

The current owner Alex Hahn is preparing to sign a lease with Mc Donalds. He has broken his promise to meet with people in the community and will not listen to objections regarding a MacDonalds on the site.

A MacDonalds at that location would threaten the character of our revitalized Grand-Lakeshore neighborhood. Parking is already impacted in that area and I dont think we need another corporate chain store in the area. Alternative suggestions include
1. A smaller, healther restaurant
2. A revamped retro Kwik Way
3. A complete redevelopment, multi- use structure like Market Hall.

there is a coalition opposing a MacDonalds at that site, which includes Oakland City Council member Danny Wan. The coalition include these groups: Grand Lake Neighborhood Crime prevention Council, Grand Lake Grime Busters, Splash Pad Neighborhood Forum, Rose Garden Neighborhood Preservation Association, Adams Point NCPC, Beat 15X (Haddon Hill) NCPC, Garfield NCPC, Brooklyn Block Club.
