Stop the Elections Dept from Throwing Terry Baum Votes Out

by Marc
Terry Baum running as a Green against Nancy Pelosi has been decertified. All those who wrote her name but didn't connect the arrows have had their votes thrown out. This is arbitrary and must be fought.
*** PLEASE FORWARD THIS WIDELY TO PEOPLE IN SAN FRANCISCO ***

As many of you know, the Department of Elections under counsel of City
Attorney Dennis Herrera has reversed course and stricken Terry Baum from
the November ballot as the Green Party nominee to take on Nancy Pelosi in
California's Congressional District 8.

The election is to be certified within the week, so we need for all those
who support not just Terry Baum, but the concept of a fair, open,
democratic and common sense election process to make some phone calls and
send some emails:

1. Elections Commission President Alix Rosenthal

(415) 554-4305
elections.commission [at] sfgov.org

- Urge her to call a special meeting of the Commission before the
primary election is certified and hold a hearing to direct staff to
formally decline the advice of the City Attorney and follow departmental
precedent and the overwhelming intent of San Francisco's Green voters that
Terry Baum be the nominee.

2. Elections Director John Arntz

(415) 554-4375
john.arntz [at] sfgov.org

- Urge him to follow common sense, departmental precedent in the
Teng/Hall runoff in 2000, and the will of the Green voters by
administratively restoring Terry Baum's ballot status.

3. City Attorney

(415) 554-6770
cityattorney [at] sfgov.org

- Urge him to overrule Julia Moll's opinion on fundamental
constitutional grounds, equal protection, due process and restore Terry
Baum's ballot status.

(415) 554-4705
julia.moll [at] sfgov.org

- Tell her that you find her opinion offensive to the fundamentals of
democracy and that as a San Francisco resident/voter/taxpayer, you would
hope that as a Deputy City Attorney that she would represent you rather
than high powered politicos such as Nancy Pelosi and Jim Sutton.

Arntz's number: 554-4348. If that's busy, call DOE at 554-4375. When you call, first choice is Arntz's voice mail. Only leave a message if they won't connect you with that.

ATTN THOSE GREENS WHO THINK THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE CONNECTED THE ARROW: Please fax Arntz at 554-7344 to complain that your vote was not counted. Say that you did what you thought you were supposed to do, in order to vote for me, and demand that your vote be counted. This is important because Arntz is now saying that there's no problem since supposedly no one has complained. How low can he go? As long as people don't complain about losing their voting rights, the problem doesn't exist! Please also fax a copy of your letter to Lowell Finley at 415 723-7141. If you don't have access to a fax, you can email the DOE at sfgov.org/election. Send a copy to lfinley [at] wwc.com.
